Sony Ericsson - S700
Clamshell phones are functionally great. Allowing larger screens, more surface area, in a compact size. But as the need for distinctive design increases, manufacturers need to find new ways to differentiate phones by adding a bit more style. Whether it be swivel, slide, or rotating, new new phones need more unique looks to draw envy from peers.

Design

The sleek exterior of the S700 has the classic curves found on previous Sony Ericsson models. The front of the S700 contains a large 262K TFT screen used for viewing the action while shooting photos or playback, while positioned in the back is the 1.3 mega pixel camera complete with lens cover. However, Sony Ericsson's goal has always been to design the S700 to resemble more like a Sony digital camera rather than a phone with a built-in camera.

By working closely with Sony's digital camera experts. Sony Ericsson incorporates overall styling, unique interface, and sleek design, to come up with a revolutionary 3-way design for the S700, resulting in a true camera style cell phone.

The Browsing Style position, with the S700 closed, still allows users to glance, talk, and view messaging without having to open the phone. Access to a variety of applications is possible while closed with features such as Media Player, 3D games, MusicDJ, WAP access, and more.

With the traditional clamshell open position, the Communication Style provides familiar cell phone usability allowing speedy text input with T9.

And the third position, the Imaging Style, by swiveling the screen into a closed position. The 262K TFT screen is now positioned opposite of the camera lens to become the viewfinder. It provides a more traditional digital camera look and feel by allowing 2-hands operations for more stable picture taking.

Camera

With the ever-growing popularity of imaging capability on mobile devices, the S700 redefines the term "camera phone." Camera phones nowadays are meant for talking, with the novel feature of taking pictures. But communicating is still the dominant feature. The S700 takes such strides in imaging, that it's difficult to determine if it's a phone with a camera, or a camera with communications capabilities.

Typically cameras on phones today capture images at 640 x 480 px and are incapable of being printed due to the lack of resolution and picture quality. With the S700, a 1.3 mega pixel CCD camera allows users to take pictures of up to 1280 x 960 px. Large enough and high enough in resolution to print great photos. Other resolutions include Small - QQVGA (160 x 120 px), Medium - QVGA (320 x 240 px), and Large - VGA (640 x 480 px).

The Camera Mode is automatically activated by opening the lens shutter, changing the screen into the viewfinder. As opposed to the "vertical" viewfinder most camera phones utilize, the S700 goes with the conventional horizontal interface more familiar with digital cameras.

Additionally, a robust set of camera features allow users to control spot photometry, choose between white modes (Auto, Bulb, Fluorescent, Fine, and Cloudy modes), filter effects (Negative, Solarization, Sepia, and Black and White modes), and various shooting modes (Night, Burst 4, and Frames). Automatic Exposure Control even allows users to take pictures effortlessly, while the S700 selects the optimal exposure time needed to capture excellent pictures.

Video clips can also be captured with the same lens at either QCIF (176 x 144 px) or Sub-QCIF (128 x 96 px). Encoded in 3GPP codec (H.263 and AMR) format, over a minute of video can be recorded. Bundled with Sony Ericsson's Quickshare software, the S700 allows users to easily share and send pictures with just a few simple clicks.

Basic Features

The Sony Ericsson S700 is tri-band 900 / 1800 / 1900 GSM, making it compatible with GSM networks in North America, Europe, and Asia. Additionally, the S700 comes with a 780 mAh Li-Ion battery that has maximum talk and standby times of 7 and 300 hours respectively under optimal conditions.

Screen

The S700 is the next step in imaging for Sony Ericsson phones. With an improved brilliant display, the 262K TFT screen with a large resolution of 240 x 320 px is an eye-catching feature allowing high color imaging and video. TFT (Thin Film Transistor), as opposed to STN (Super Twisted Nematic), has the circuit transistors placed on the glass at the pixel location instead of the need to scan the pixel location. This results in greatly increasing the response time and allows for very fast refresh rates, which is needed for using the S700 as a viewfinder.

Audio

Polyphonic ring tones and the MIDI format has become standard in the cell phone industry. However the number of chords, and hence quality of sound, has been steadily increasing. The S700 can play up to 40 simultaneous chords (instruments). With the MIDI format, users are able to compose, edit, and send melodies by using the built-in MusicDJ sound synthesizer program.

Additionally, it contains a MP3 player, stereo FM-radio receiver, and loudspeaker. The Media Player converts the phone into a portable MP3, MPEG4, and H.263 player allowing users to play music as well as watch pictures or streamed or downloaded video clips.

Sony Ericsson has taken a page from Nokia and decided to add FM radios in their phones, as shown with the released K700. The radio is built-in and offers instant and easy access to FM radio channels. It can be listened through portable handsfree accessories or via the loudspeaker. Furthermore, the supplied headset doubles as the antenna. The stereo FM-radio allows users to store up to 20 predefined channels.

Messaging

By rotating the S700 to the open position, a keypad is revealed for text messaging. And Sony Ericsson has incorporated the latest text messaging features in the S700. SMS and MMS lets consumers communicate by saying it in words, saying it with pictures, animating it, and adding sound. Great for sending multimedia birthday or holiday greetings, or vacation postcard messages. By combining with sharp pictures of the built-in camera with the versatile messaging features, the S700 brings interesting combinations of photography and personalized messaging to keep people in touch.

SMS and MMS are used extensively to exchange pictures, jokes and important messages. The maximum size of an MMS message which is supported is 100 KB. The keys and joystick provide excellent tactile feedback which makes composing messages a breeze. The phone supports a wide variety of MIME types for OTA (Over-The-Air) transfers. With the new menu system coming in place, users will find a highly intuitive experience.

The S700 supports email accounts and protocols for POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP. It stores messages dynamically, depending on memory available, and updates the inbox automatically and over the air. Users can check email anywhere and reply on the move so they will always be in contact with friends and family.

Wireless Village instant messaging (My Friends) is also included in this phone. It goes beyond previous mobile chat features. The Wireless Village specifications define how the instant messaging provides an open connection with existing IM providers, such as AOL, ICQ, Yahoo and MSN.

The result is a system for sharing personal information about the user's status, (e.g., on-line, off-line, busy), location (home, work), and the moods of their friends and colleagues (happy, angry). In addition, services will allow users to participate in private or public chat rooms with search capabilities. Ultimately network operators will be able to provide meeting and conferencing type of services with shared content.

Entertainment

In addition to personalizing backgrounds, screen savers, and ringtones, Sony Ericsson has always been on the forefront of customizability with it's unique theme features. With themes, users can change settings such as colors, menu layouts, images, and ringtones, making it more personal. The S700 comes preloaded with a number of themes, but more can be created and downloaded.

Gaming is now seen as a standard feature among cell phones. However Sony Ericsson has gone a step ahead. More processing power, a large 262K color screen, Java 3D, and the Mascot API all results in improved graphics that reacts faster to user commands.

Supporting Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME), the S700 allows users to download and install new games and applications. Currently, J2ME is the most popular platform for cellular phone, so many games are available for download. Some for free, some for a fee. But developers can also create applications for the S700 with Java technology.

But even more exciting is that the phone utilizes the popular Mascot Capsule Java 3D gaming engine, and multiplayer games. It renders 3D objects in real-time on a display screen. By incorporating sophisticated APIs the result is more detailed games.

For applications, SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language), an advanced XML-based protocol, allows users to create and transmit Microsoft PowerPoint presentations on mobile devices. By using a media editor, users can incorporate text, audio, images, and video clips to assemble full multimedia presentations on the display.

Internet

The WAP 2.0 browser supports WML, xHTML Mobile and Basic, and CSS. It contains GPRS 4+2 for increased bandwidth capabilities over standard CSD networks. Providing high-speed, cost efficient access to the Internet.

Storage

The phonebook capacity can store up to 500 contacts, while a large 32 MB internal memory is shared among multimedia and messages. For smaller file sized features such as pictures, ring tones, messaging or games, the S700 has more than enough.

However, if users wish to utilize the full capacity of the built-in MP3 player and digital camera, external storage is needed. And Sony Ericsson has been quick to supply an expandable Memory Stick Duo slot. The Memory Stick Duo is Sony's proprietary portable storage media that currently has a maximum capacity of 128 MB of memory. Luckily a 16 MB Memory Stick Duo is supplied with the S700. But any additional Memory Sticks will come at a premium price.

Connectivity

Multimedia can be downloaded through Bluetooth, infrared, or data cable. While, photos and video taken with the S700 can be transferred to a PC by those same means.

The Sony Ericsson S700 can connect to peripheral devices at a range of up to 10 meters using Bluetooth technology. Link without cables to headsets, car handsfree equipment, computers, PDAs, digital cameras, and more. The S700 identifies and maintains up to 16 devices simultaneously to make sure everything you need is there.

The most interesting feature is the presence of Bluetooth HID (Human Interface Devices) profiles. Once the phone is connect to a PC through Bluetooth, it becomes essentially a combined keyboard and mouse. By assigning specific combinations of computer keyboard key presses to each key on the phone keypad, users can control computer applications with the phone as a remote.

HID configuration files can be downloaded into the phone using the methods stated earlier. Configuration files are needed for keypad controls of individual computer application. These consist of an XML file for the keypad and an image for the display. Users can modify the files themselves on their computers. A few configuration files are pre-loaded in the phone that enables the user to navigate on a computer desktop, control presentations, and media players.

For fast synchronization, the S700 supports all the latest PAN (Personal Area Network) and OTA (Over-The-Air) technologies for synchronization. For synchronizing between the S700 and a PC, the phone is also SyncML compatible. SyncML is the common language for synchronizing all devices and applications over any network. With SyncML any personal information, such as email, calendars, to-do lists, contact information and other relevant data, will be consistent, accessible and up to date, no matter where the information is stored.
