Sony Ericsson - P910
In the beginning of 2003, Sony Ericsson introduced the P800, a phone unrivaled at the time. It featured PDA functionality, digital camera access, MP3 capabilities, and robust text messaging options. All while most phones on the market were still grayscale.
[AD]

With the progression from the P800 to the P900 and now to the P910, Sony Ericsson hopes to continue the technological dominance. By introducing a QWERTY / numeric keypad combination, improved screen display, and versatile applications platform built on a Symbian OS, the P910 will surely catch consumers' attentions.

Design

The design of the Sony Ericsson P910 is similar to the P900, with a large touch screen and flip situated on the front. The P910 operates in two modes as well; with the flip open, and closed.

When the flip is open, the full 208 x 320 px 262K TFT touch screen is visible. Additionally, a built-in QWERTY keyboard is located on the underside of the flip. So users can choose between three possible text entry modes: the flip keyboard, the onscreen keyboard, or handwriting recognition.

With the flip closed, the P910 can be used like a conventional phone. The outer side of the flip is a numeric keypad. Navigating through menus can be easily achieved with the 5-way jog dial.

Another option is to remove the flip completely. In this case, the P910 would operate in flip open mode only, with the addition of an optional virtual flip.

Located along the left side of the P910 are a covered stereo headset socket, 5-way jog dial, and infrared eye. While the right side contains a slot to hold the stylus.

Positioned on the back of the P910 is a lens for the built-in camera, a mirror for taking self-portraits, and the loudspeaker grille. Charger and accessory connectors are situated on the bottom.

Camera

The widespread popularity of camera phones has all but saturated the market, and the imaging capabilities of the P910 are top notch. The built-in camera, called a CommuniCorder, is able to shoot still pictures and video recordings. Photos captured with the P910 can be taken at sizes of either Small - QQVGA (160 x 120 px), Medium - QVGA (320 x 240 px), or Large - VGA (640 x 480 px) resolutions, while providing 24-bit color depth at 16 million colors.

The CommuniCorder may be used in both flip modes. With the convenience of the flip closed, fast point-and-shoot pictures are possible by using the screen as the viewfinder. For situations that require more camera control, users can shoot photos with the flip open. In addition to the viewfinder on the screen, supplemental graphical controls are shown to access camera settings.

The robust set of camera settings available for image correction include Picture Modes (Video, Auto, Night, Indoor, Outdoor, Message Picture, Message Video), Image Size, Image Quality (High, Medium, Low), Video Size, Brightness and Contrast, Lighting (Automatic, One of four preset values), Delay Timer, (1 to 25 seconds), Picture Freeze Timer (1 to 10 seconds).

Images taken are stored in the P910's memory. Storage space is shared with other applications, thus free space can vary considerably. However, approximate image sizes are 50 KB for VGA, 16K for QVGA, and 3 KB for QQVGA.

When recording videos, however, resolution is fixed to 176 x 144 px (QCIF). The resulting files are encoded using real time 3GPP, H.263, or MPEG-4 compression, together with Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) compressed sound. File size is roughly 1 MB per second of recording.

Basic Features

The Sony Ericsson P910 is tri-band GSM. However frequencies and firmware will depend on region. Europe and Asia will be supplied with the P910i (GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900), China the P910c (GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900), and North and Latin America the P910a (GSM 850 / 1800 / 1900).
[AD]

Functionally, however, the models are similar. All models use the ARM 9 processor to run the Symbian OS v7.0s and the established UIQ user interface. Symbian OS is the open standard operating system licensed by the world's leading mobile phone manufacturers. It's specifically designed for phones by providing a robust multitasking kernel, integrated telephony support, communications protocols, data management, and advanced graphics support.

Version 7.0s adds many features to previous editions, however nothing ground breaking. New features include Multiple PDP, which allows users to use multiple networks simultaneously. For example, users can surf the web using GPRS on one account, while download email from GSM data on another. The OS has the ability to intelligently choose network connections based in signal strength, allowing for multiple billing accounts. And multi-threaded multimedia framework (MMF) offers improved audio, video, and imaging.

Additionally, the P910 comes with a 1260 mAh Li-Polymer battery that has impressive optimal talk and standby times of up to 13 and 400 hours respectively.

Screen

As mentioned earlier, the surface of the display is touch screen, with back-light illumination. Text may be entered using natural handwriting over the whole screen. A marker on the middle of the screen determines where text entries should be written: lower case letters are entered below the marker, uppercase letters in line with it, and numerals above it.

The P910 has an improved color depth over the P900 as well. Its screen is capable of displaying a 262K color 18-bit depth, compared to the 65K color 16-bit depth of the P900. It should be noted that only picture applications use the complete 262K colors in full screen mode. All other cases use only 65K. Resolution size is dependant on operation mode: flip closed (208 x 208 px), or flip open (208 x 320 px). Additionally, light intensity levels for active and standby screens are user adjustable.

The P910's TFT (Thin Film Transistor) LCD allows for quick response and refresh rates when compared to older STN (Super Twisted Nematic) matrices. TFT, as opposed to STN, has the circuit transistors placed on the glass at the pixel location instead of the need to scan the pixel location. This results in much clearer displays while greatly increasing the response times, allowing for very fast refresh rates. Rates needed for using the P910's screen as a viewfinder and playing action-packed games.

Audio

The P910 has extensive multimedia capabilities in many applications. The MIDI format has become standard for polyphonic ring tones. And the number of chords determines the quality of sound and instruments that can be played simultaneously.
[AD]

Sadly, only 24 simultaneous chords are supported. While still decent, it is not comparable to other high-end phones with upwards of 40 chords. Unlike other formats, MIDI is not a recording of music, but a description, which enables a local synthesizer to play tones from the file instructions. The benefit is that users are able to compose, edit, and send melodies by using sound synthesizer programs.

However, for true realistic sounds, the P910 also allows other forms of recording, specifically MP3 format. Unlike MIDI, MP3s are straight recordings from any audio source. Thus ring tones encoded in MP3 format can be music with lyrics, voice, or any other output.

Additionally, a loudspeaker and Music Player are built-in. The P910 Music Player allows users to play a selection of songs from a variety of file formats. Audio file formats supported include MP3 (Compressed MPEG-1 Layer 3), MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate), AU (Similar to WAV), iMelody (Monophonic ring tones), RMF (Rich Music Format), and WAV (Typically for short alert sounds).

Video

In addition to recording videos, clips may be viewed right on the P910. Files may also be ownloaded from the Internet or copied from a PC. Supported video file formats include 3GP or MP4.

The P910 supports streaming as well. Content can be streamed using RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) session control with H.263 or MPEG-4 video, and accompanying AAC or AMR audio.

Messaging

The P910 is incredibly well adapted for text messaging. With the built-in QWERTY keypad, handwriting recognition, or numeric keypad, users will be able to choose their preferred text entry method. Additionally, the P910 has a robust set of messaging functions including SMS, EMS, MMS, and email allowing users to communicate with words, pictures, sounds, and more.

With SMS (Short Message Service), users can send text messages containing up to 160 characters (70 characters for Chinese text). Concatenated SMS is possible by writing longer messages. The P910 will automatically send it using more than one SMS. EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service) enhances SMS further by allowing users to include graphics, sounds, and font attributes as part of a text message. While MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) provides true multimedia capability with real pictures, sound and time-based sequencing.

MMS lets consumers communicate by saying it in words, pictures, animation, and sound. Great for sending multimedia birthday or holiday greetings, or vacation postcard messages, by combining with sharp pictures of the built-in camera with the versatile messaging features, the P910 brings interesting combinations of photography and personalized messaging to keep people in touch.

An email client supports multiple POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP accounts. The supplied Sony Ericsson PC Suite allows users to synchronize the P910's email accounts with Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes. Users can check email anywhere and reply on the move so they will always be in contact with friends and family.

Internet

The P910 features WAP 2.0, and contains an integrated browser capable of browsing several different web page types. The browser features HTML 3.2 with limited support of frames and JavaScript, WML 1.3 (Wireless Markup Language), which is similar to HTML but optimized for mobile devices, xHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) support that combines HTML 4.0 and XML, allowing the design of pages that will work on small handheld devices, and cHTML (Compact HTML), a version of HTML optimized for small handheld devices widely used in Japan.

The support of GPRS 4+1 (General Packet Radio Service), allows for faster transfer speeds for downlink rates of up to 53.6 kbps and uplink rates of up to 13.4 kbps. GPRS is able to take advantage of existing GSM networks by enhancing data communication capabilities.

For areas where GPRS is not available, HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) can provide download and upload rates of 28.8 kbps and 14.4 kbps respectively. When the P910 is connected to a laptop using infrared, Bluetooth, or cable, users can "dial-up" to Internet Service Providers using conventional HSCSD, or CSD (Circuit Switched Data).

Storage

For settings, user data including images, contacts, and messages, and third party applications, the P910 has internal memory of up to 64 MB. The memory is dynamically allocated depending on the amount of free space available.

However, if more space is needed, users can utilize the P910's expansion slot and purchase additional Memory Stick Duo cards that range up to 128 MB, or Memory Stick Pro Duo up to 1 GB. Users will be able to store MP3 music albums, videos, or any other memory intensive media. The Memory Stick Duo is Sony's proprietary portable storage media, so any additional Memory Sticks will come at a premium price.

[AD]

With the minimal number of simultaneous ring tones chords, the P910 falls behind the market. However, not a problem. With the support of MP3 ring tones, polyphonic ring tones become a thing of the past.

The built-in camera is wonderful for capture images and videos at impromptu moments. While the entertainment and games are exciting: particularly V-Rally.

Although specifics aren't known right now, the P910 is expected to be released some time in Q4 2004 at a hefty price tag of about $700.
