Sony - CMD Z5
Size that all it's not - the Sony CMD-Z5 GSM900/1800

I'm a Nokia loyalist. Nokia loyalists do not actually like other phones other than the fun, funky, sophisticated and suave phones the prodigies at Nokia concoct up time and again. However, I've got to admit that the Sony CMD-Z5 has got me smitten - it has not only caught my attention, but have actually impressed me more than it should have.
It has not only caught my attention, but have actually impressed me more than it should have.

Its superb combination of looks, features and handling makes it a real jewel to behold. Weighing at just 83 grams with its rechargeable Lithium-ion battery and measuring a mere 87(h) x 49(w) x 22(d) mm with a 25mm stub antenna, the Z5 is just about the lightest phone around. The number-pad has a flip key cover, which can be set up to answer and end calls automatically as it is opened or closed. The screen is of decent size, with up to six lines of information that can be displayed. However, with the top and bottom lines being used for icons and other information, it only adds up to four lines of readable text. The attention grabbing detail of this phone was the thumb-wheel interface - which is and has been Sony's hallmark for some years now.

This wheel is not only the heart of the menu's system, but can be used to control most of the phone's operations - allowing manipulation with just one hand, with the thumb alone doing all the work. Sony has improved on the jog/dial on this phone - as well as being able to turn the wheel to act like a cursor to control and pressing the wheel in to select a function, the Z5's thumbwheel can also be tilted forwards and backwards. Pushing the control forwards acts like a 'clear' button, while pushing the controls away from you brings up the special menus.

While the thumbwheel is the main navigation control, Sony has taken other steps to make this little baby as straightforward as possible. The way that the screen is laid out, for instance, is designed to aid the operation it is in at the time. A perfect example of this is with the Large and clear display calculator function, where the screen provides a diagram of exactly what each of the keys below will do.

The phone uses the T9 text input system, which extensively eases the burden of typing in words using the number pad. This predictive text system cannot only be used when penning e-mails and SMS messages; it can also be used for diary and phonebook entries.
it simplifies Internet content so that it can fit nicely onto a small, simple LCD screen found on phones

Being in the limelight for the smallest WAP handset, it not only goes by that, but also has built-in e-mail facilities and HTML browser. Weather it works is yet to be seen. The reason behind that is the fact that the whole point of a WAP is that it simplifies Internet content so that it can fit nicely onto a small, simple LCD screen found on phones. HTML, the full-blown language of the Internet is full of graphics, animation and pictures - which are impossible to see on a phone and would take far too long to download. The phone has a 132kb cache, and the browser is said to be equivalent to using Explorer 2.1.

The memory on this phone is pretty amazing. Not only it can remember 500 names and numbers, it can also remember people's addresses and e-mail details as well. In fact, the phone will allow for storage of several numbers and free text entries under each name. An appropriate icon can also be chosen for each number or address. The appointment function is equally impressive, allowing for a log of about 500 sundry appointments, anniversaries, meetings and birthdays. The calendar display allows for viewing the days which entries are put for, as well as having able to access the day wanted to add information to quickly with the flick of the thumb by using the thumbwheel.

The rest of the phone's memory is used then for recording spoken messages. This can store up to five minutes of speech. The beautiful thing about this work of art is, unlike most other phones with memo capabilities, this memo facility can also be pressed into service as an answer phone. Although all networks offer a perfectly adequate voicemail service, a built-in answer phone has its advantages - there's no charge for listening to your messages, and you can change the message easily and as often as you like. A cool feature from this function is that you can leave a message for a particular caller - therefore, only someone ringing from a specific number will hear what you have to say. However, things have to be kept short and sweet, as both incoming and outgoing messages can only be up to 20 seconds long.

Compact in size, huge in functions, the Sony CMD Z5 mobile phone is a phone in its own right, with all the right features, gadgets, knobs and buttons to keep both the dummy and the phone enthusiast happy exploring.
