Overview
The S45 was a pleasant phone to use. Having business people in mind, Siemens designed this phone to cater for those many aspects of a phone that are important - including WAP over GPRS, voice recorder, an internal phonebook holding up to 500 contacts, business card exchange, profiles, calendar and calculator functions. But most importantly, the S45 has a talk time of up to nearly six hours and standby time of up to 300 hours.
For those people who have read my review on the Siemens ME45, you will find this one to be very similar because both the S45 and ME45 handsets are based on the same platform - meaning aspects such as the phone’s functionality and software will be very synonymous if not the same. It may be a good idea to have a look at the overview of the ME45 review to gain a more fruitful insight on what the S45 has to offer as well.

Getting to those not-so-similar aspects, the S45 is a well-designed phone with very little corners to be found. The phone is encapsulated in a silver-coloured case which makes the phone attractive and acceptable. Weighing in at less than 100 grams, it fits nicely in your hand, pocket or just right there on the desk.
"The Li-Ion battery standby time of approximately 4-5 days"
Using the S45 was also a breeze. Fortunately, the buttons on the S45 was somewhat easier to use than those on the ME45 (this was mainly because the ME45’s keypad is made of material that is both dust and water resistant). The menus and the phone’s functions are, also, of no significant difference to that of the ME45. Going through the phone’s menus and using its functions was a breeze thanks to the very responsive keypad.
Preset WAP profiles, with the inclusion of GPRS settings for all Australian GSM networks, were already preloaded onto the S45 - thereby taking away the process of needing to do all that setting up. The speakerphone function is also available which gives users another handsfree option in addition to either headset or car kit options.
The Li-Ion battery that comes with the S45 allows for an average standby time of approximately 4-5 days and average talk time of 3-4 hours. As the battery has just completed only one to two charge cycles only, these times will increase as more charge cycles are done.
Major differences...
"Size comparisons with Nokia 6210; Infrared located on the left-side of the phone"
"Little short-cut key for the voice recorder on the right-side of the phone, which allows you to record a voice memo up to 3 minutes "
GPRS with WAP 1.2 browser
The S45 supports WAP over GPRS feature - which means fast, always-on browsing of WAP pages without the need to dial in to get a service. One does not need to use a premium phone to have GPRS!
T9 predictive text input
The built-in T9 dictionary means that typing up SMS messages becomes less troublesome and time-consuming. Several language options can be chosen - with most of them European. The T9 on the S45 keeps up with a user’s typing speed quite well - whether the pace is slow or fast.
Dual band (GSM 900/1800 MHz)
The S45 supports most European, African and Asia-Pacific networks - ones that run on either 900MHz or 1800MHz bands.
Synchronisation with MS Outlook
The supplied data exchange and QuickSync software allows for easy management of your contacts between your PC’s MS Outlook software and the dynamic phone book on the S45. In addition, appointments can also be kept in sync as well.
Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) support
In addition to supporting SMS, the S45 also supports the displaying of predefined pictures and sounds from a received message thanks to EMS. Phones that support EMS is able to send and receive messages that are not restricted to simply words and text.
Infrared
The built-in infrared device allows communications between computing devices (for example - PC, PDA, etc) that can utilise the S45 as a modem enabling data connections. It can also be used between other mobile phones for business card exchanges.
"The Voice recorder"
Voice recorder (Dictaphone) and voice control
The S45 has a built-in voice recorder that can take up to just less than three minutes’ worth. This function can be activated with ease via holding onto a button on the right-side of the phone. Also, an exhaustive list of functions on the phone can be activated via using voice - with some of them including missed calls and the activation of different profiles.
Speakerphone feature
The S45 allows a user to conduct telephone conversations without the need to hold the phone or use a headset. This feature becomes convenient when having a third hand is a wish whilst you’re being busy with the other two! :)
Dynamic phonebook feature
The dynamic phonebook on the S45 can hold up to 500 contacts - with each contact holding up to a maximum of 14 entries. That’s plenty for just one contact!
Screen saver
The analogue clock screen saver is a very useful feature that acts something like a watch when the phone is not being used. If you prefer something else, then maybe loading up your favourite picture (or bitmap) would be an alternative.
In Summary
For those who may have gotten a bit bored of using Nokia phones to conduct business dealings or personal relationships, Siemens have offered a viable alternative with the S45. This phone is comparable to the 6210 in many ways - and beats it in those same ways as well.
Although the S45 doesn’t have all the features that it could include, it does have the right set of features necessary for people to get the job done. Considering the features that it does have available, the phone is quite reasonably priced. |
