Sendo - X
A virtually unknown manufacturer until now, Sendo has taken the mobile world by storm after releasing the all new Sendo X smartphone. Based on the Nokia Series 60 platform, here is the much awaited preview of this wonderful device.

Design

The design and style of a phone plays a vital role in the buying decision, and the keys should gel with the design of the phone. The Sendo X stands out in the crowd, not only because of a good design but also due to good grip. The phone has class stamped all over it with an aluminum finish. Overall, the fit and finish of the phone is exceptional.

It has a compact size of 110.5 x 48.5 x 22.8 mm and weighs in at 120 g. Due to it's compact size, it fits easily in the hand.

The back of the phone really looks sleek with the camera. And a small mirror for capturing self portraits fits snugly within the phone's framework.

Basic Features

In the words of Sendo, the operating system is a Sendo enhanced Nokia Series 60 over Symbian OS. It is certainly enhanced as we shall see later on.

The phone has tri-band support along with support for eGSM 900 mhz band. Users will definitely find a faster internet experience due to the provision for GPRS class 8. The ETSI GSM 11.14 (Rel. 98) version of the SIM ATK (Application Toolkit) is supported. The phone has a 1050 mAh battery and is rated to last up to 170 hours during standby and 7 hours of talk time under optimal conditions.

Screen

Smartphones nowadays are supposed to have a good display and naturally, a good integrated camera. The Sendo X certainly does not disappoint on this front. It sports one of the first flashes in a handset while utilizing CMOS camera technology. And also contains a maximum camera resolution of 640 x 480 px. Other features such as a self-timer, and red eye reduction makes for better picture quality.

Sendo has made some drastic and much needed improvements to the Series 60 platform. The large display has now become larger. At a resolution of 176 x 220 px and 65,536 TFT color screen, it is slightly taller than conventional Nokia displays. This added height is used to good effect by displaying the network coverage even when the user is inside the menu system. An intelligent processor, called GraphiX, also dedicates itself to painting pixels and thus giving the user a much better experience.

Audio

The audio capabilities are impressive. The Sendo X has the ability to play MP3 files using the proprietary SoniX sound dual port speaker. It also can support up to 64 voice polyphonic ringtones. AMR, WAV and Real Audio allows you to record your own voice.

RealOne Player is also included in the package for streaming media. The camera captures of up to 30 fps which places the phone in the elite league. Additionally, Real Video (Versions 7 and 8) and MPEG4 in 3GP format are also supported.

Messaging

SMS and MMS are used extensively to exchange pictures, jokes and important messages. Due to good button placement, typing continuously does not strain the wrist.

It supports a wide variety of MIME types for OTA (Over-The-Air) transfers. The maximum MMS size is 100 KB each way. It also supports a variety of image formats such as JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP and WBMP.

Up to a humongous 6 email accounts can be configured. All the major protocols are supported: POP3, IMAP4, SSL and SMTP. Additionally, PC synchronization is possible using the Sendo PC connect software.

Entertainment

This phone also includes some customizable themes which allow the user to change the look and feel of the menus. It is to be seen whether this feature can rival the excellent themes offered by Sony Ericsson in their phones.

The phone also comes with two pre-installed games: Sendo Pinball and Funny Farmer. While most of us are familiar with pinball, Funny Farmer is much more interesting. Players must develop their farm and try to eventually become a Master Farmer. More games can be installed as long as they are compatible with Series 60 platforms. Countless games are already developed due to the popularity of the Nokia standard. The phone has many other useful applications such as Notepad, Calculator, Converter, a basic Clock and voice control.

Internet

Browsing the web on the built-in WAP 2.0 browser is decent. The Sendo X renders pages in HTML format including CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

The browser also delivers enhanced user experience as a result of its Small Screen Rendering (SSR) technology. SSR reformats web content to fit the Sendo X screen. However, we have a few doubts about this technology. Since this might mean that a part of the formatting might be lost during the reconversion process. Addressing this issue, Sendo officials have said that this feature can be disabled by the users if required.

SSL 3 technology is available for extra security. The phone also has an extensive Digital Rights Management (DRM) scheme to protect virtually every MIME type. Additionally, the Sendo X supports OTA specifications (Version 7.0) as well as the Nokia Smart Messaging System Version 3.0.

Storage

The phone has a large 64 MB internal storage memory of which 32 MB is available for user applications. Nevertheless, the phone is capable of expandable MMC and SD cards. Now users can have large memory capacities in their phones for storing all the features the phone can do. As if that wasn't enough, the system also supports hot-swapping. Easily plug-in or remove the external memory cards as and when they require.

Connectivity

The X is a very well connected phone. It features all the latest PAN (Personal Area Network) technologies. Bluetooth, infrared as well as a USB data cable are included in the package. All this will ensure a seamless experience. Sendo has also mentioned that they will shortly be releasing a new Bluetooth car kit and headset.

The good news is that the Sendo X supports user installable firmware upgrades. This means that users will have less trouble when they want to upgrade the firmware.

The phone also has an excellent document viewer which supports a wide range of file formats like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF and ZIP. A CD is included in the package which contains over 40 additional document viewer plug-ins that will enable users to view other file formats on the phone.

Sendo officials have informed us that the phone will initially have a language pack consisting of 7 languages., English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. A simplified Chinese version is also on the cards.

Conclusion

Overall, the phone introduces some excellent features which take it beyond the realm of the ordinary crop of PDA-phones out in the market. The main rivals undoubtedly are the upcoming Sony Ericsson P900 and the new smartphones from Samsung and Handspring.
[AD]

While offering better memory handling capacity and entertainment options than the P900, it remains to be seen whether the so-called enhanced Series 60 platform is really enhanced or not.

But the phone stays true on the catchphrase designed for it: "See More, Hear More, Connect More, Do More." It certainly has a "More" feeling to it. The phone should be officially released before the end of the year, in time for the holiday shopping season.
