Sendo - J530The Gamer's choice, the Sendo J530
Being the latest creation of the British phone maker, the stylish Sendo J530 was demonstrated for the first time at this years' 3GSM World Congress with great success, stated not only by the comments of the participants but more importantly by those of the guests. Still, is that success enough for a "newcomer" in the low-end mobile market? Let's find out...
With as many as 12 new games, small dimensions, and an impressive blue backlight, the new Sendo is, according to the British company, very much targeted at the youth market. Still, it's not yet another typical low-end handset. It's the youngest heir of the Sendo Company, and this means that it incorporates only the best of its manufacturer's technology. The J530 from the first look arouses feelings of sympathy and intrigue. Its compact dimensions, measuring only 107x50x25 mm and its reduced weight of 75 gr. are more than enough to allow it to sit comfortably in your hands. The quality of the outer plastic is average, but the soft blue backlight and the semi transparent back cover are almost enough to compensate for that. The well-placed keyboard looks really nice also, especially in the dark. All its keys are made of hard silver plastic; they really look and feel solid but respond a bit slowly to commands.
One of the true virtues of the Sendo J530 is without a doubt its high resolution display of 96 x 64 pixels. A display which is wide enough to help you navigate easily and comfortably in the phone's menu and at the same time display up to 6 lines of text. Unfortunately it does not support contrast or illumination control, something of great need in today's displays. The phone's menu is intuitive with vivid screensavers, pictures and smart animations but lacks usability and some details. It consists of only 6 sub menus like Messages-Internet-Sounds-Settings-Services-Extras, which offer only the really basic customizations of the phone.
Being a true low-end competitor, the Sendo phone attempts to impress the youth market with few of its nice features, posting an adequate result. In the phones sub-menu called Extras you can find 12 embedded games, a number which, if memory serves makes the J530 the handset with the highest number of pre loaded games. Four of these games (Chess, Checkers, Riversi and KombatClub) are interactive, which means users can play against others with the same kind of phone via SMS, wherever they might be. For those serious text messengers the Sendo phone offers SMS Chat (no EMS sadly enough), Picture Messaging, integrated smilies in your messages and T9 predictive text input. Unfortunately you will never receive a delivery confirmation for your message since it does not support the function. For those of you who enjoy sound effects and crisp melodies this phone will surely make you rock. It incorporates a built in Equalizer that offers you Normal, Bass or Tremble management of the phone's 50 melodies while the embedded Melody Composer will help you create your own melodies and assign them as incoming -only- sounds. For this feature there's a pre configured space for 5 composed tones.
The J520 at night
Apart from those fun features the Sendo J530 is still a mobile "phone". It is a Dual Band (900/1800MHz) GSM handset, with a Microsoft Mobile Explorer WAP browser in version 1.2.1 which includes the WTLS class 2 protocol for secure online transactions, and therefore it is predisposed for mobile electronic commerce. It features a simple but effective organizer and memo function (unfortunately inoperative when the phone is inactive), an email client with the ability to send/receive messages from POP3/SMTP servers, and Voice commands, as Voice Dialing (20 phone numbers) and a Voice Memo. I'm not sure if I experienced a bug with the specific model that I received, but after 10 efforts or so, I never managed to record a single memo, mo matter how hard I tried. Nobody is perfect though...
Apart from its undisputable virtues, the Sendo phone does have certain negatives. Firstly, there's no phone book storage apart from the one on the SIM card. The phone doesn't feature an integrated Phone Book memory, so it's back to basics for those of us who'd wish to have more... There are no User Profiles or "silent" alert, to help you use the phone more efficiently, and the vibrator alert that exists, is noisy enough to be really irritating. No IrDA port or any other way to exchange data to and from the handset, apart from some SMS ringing tones... The last thing that was a bit disappointing was the average strength of the phone's signal in certain locations, where it should have other reception levels...Generally though the audio quality was very good, in reception as well as in transmission, also thanks to the codes HR/FR/EFR while the listening quality was considered average.
Sendo claims about 6 days of standby time and 180 minutes of talk time should be available with the standard battery, but with regular use the battery should be good for at least 2-3 days and no longer.
I'm bit too negative you say? No just fair. As mentioned before: nobody is perfect, and so is this cute little phone. As a competitor in the low end mobile market it has tons of potential, as it incorporates user friendly features, sharp design and minimal dimensions all combined with loads of personalization tricks...As for the drawbacks? You can certainly live with them... |
