Samsung - SGH-2400Samsung SGH 2400
The first impression given by the Samsung SGH 2400 is how much it resembled the year-old Samsung SGH 600. The former looks and feels nearly the same as its predecessor, only noticeably lighter, by 5g to be exact. And its functions? The SGH 2400 is a much-improved version of the SGH 600.
The 90g SGH 2400 is offered in two colors: graphite grey (S$598) and champagne (S$698). However, after a week of handling, the SGH 2400 began to show signs of corrosion (from the effects of sweaty palms) around the edge of the flip, an affliction which appears to affect the SGH and SCH models.
The "snap-on, snap-off" active flip worked well enough, but somehow lacked the more anchored feel of the SGH 600. What we liked was the screen font which seems to have undergone a change since the SGH 600. It is now much easier on the eye, with an LCD display that can accommodate up to four lines of sans serif text and one fixed icon. The battery slot is yet another neat improvement by Samsung engineers, with a spring-controlled battery slot that resolves the hassle of prying the battery out of its tight slot.
The keypad comes with backlight, another nice touch, with soft keys that provide more comfortable handling than the plastic-y ones on some handphones.
Excellent Reception
By far the greatest improvement in the 2400 is its reception, which comes as a pleasant surprise after one has been primed by the SGH 600 and earlier models to expect mediocre voice clarity and reception. The SGH 2400 received and delivered clearly in all the usual test areas: in a moving vehicle, underground, and in an open area flanked by high-rise buildings and tall trees. When I made a call in a packed double-decker bus during morning rush hour, I didn't have to raise my voice for the other party to hear me clearly.
Extra Features
The menu is similar to what was offered in earlier versions, but now includes data connectivity via the Samsung Soft Mobile (S/W) modem to send and receive fax. PC synchronization is also another capability of the SGH 2400, allowing it to be linked directly to your laptop with optional data kit for all data communications.
As is now synonymous with Samsung's SGH range of handphones, the SGH 2400 comes with hands-free, voice-activated dialing which can store up to 20 names. A "voice guide" is constantly in hand to help users with voice-dialing and voice memo, thus making the process easier and much more pleasant. However, when one tried using the voice dial function in a noisy environment, the phone was unable to differentiate between the background noise and my voice command, and had to be held almost lip to phone speaker to make a difference.
Other features include vibration alert, up to 99 phonebook name and number entries, alarm and world time function, one touch call answer or reject. While fiddling around with the phone, I discovered a short cut access to the vibra-alert mode, which can be switched on by depressing the volume button on the side for about three seconds.
Battery Life Only Slightly Longer
The rechargeable lithium-ion batteries had only a slightly higher talktime than the SGH 600, by less than 10 percent. The SGH 2400 offered up to five hours of talktime and 95 hours standby time.
Can The SGH 2400 Hold Its Own?
Compared to those in the same price range, the SGH 2400 may not have the Nokia 7110's (S$598) WAP capability or the Philip Xenium 939's award-winning Carousel interface. Where the SGH 2400 does shine is its excellent reception when tested with SIM cards from different mobile service providers. |
