Although initially taken aback by the girly looks of the my700x, BRIGITTE ROZARIO finds the phone fun to use.
Generally I do not like phones that look plasticky with interchangeable covers. That was exactly my first impression of this phone – plasticky with buttons that make it hard to type out SMS texts. The white colour of the phone did nothing to endear it to me, either.
However, on closer inspection and in use, the phone impressed me with its features.
Music to my ears
What I really enjoyed about the my700X was the FM radio and the music player which played not just MP3s but also AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WAV files.
You have to plug in your headphones for the radio to work though and as for music files on the phone, I’d suggest you use the headphones too because the sound is much better with them. Without headphones you can still play your music files but the sound is kind of bass-y.
What I really liked about the music player on the phone was that you can adjust the equaliser settings. This is great for those who love to fidget with the bass and treble settings.
To transfer your music files to the phone from your PC, you can use the USB cable or Bluetooth.
Both of which worked like a breeze.
Incidentally, there’s a shortcut button on the side of the phone which when pressed will play your music files so you don’t have to unlock the phone and navigate through the menu to get to the music player and start playing songs.
In fact, this shortcut button works without even waking up the phone from sleep mode. There’s even a volume button at the side of the phone.
Say cheese
The camera worked great and the big display screen was a joy to use. In fact the camera seemed to brighten up dark areas without the use of any flash.
I do wish there was a shortcut button on the phone to switch on the camera without having to go through the menu, though.
I’ll take a stab in the dark and say the phone is being marketed as a phone cum music player rather than a camera phone.
While there is an option to shoot videos on the phone, the files are saved in 3gp format. The phone does not come packaged with any software to play back the video files on your PC. The videos looked fine on the phone and you will need a player like QuickTime to view it on your PC.
I did like the wallpaper settings which allowed me to choose “random.” This meant that the wallpaper would change randomly.
Every time I looked at the screen it would be a pleasant surprise and there were more than 10 or so wallpapers that took turns appearing on the screen.
Niggles
I hated having to input the correct date and time whenever I switched on the phone after switching it off for a few hours or days. With my Sony Ericsson phone, the clock and calendar still run even when the phone is switched off and so far I’ve not had to adjust the clock after switching off for a few hours.
I’m not sure if the my700X is targeted at women or people with small fingers but the flat buttons were cumbersome for one-handed tapping out of SMS texts. I did get better at it with practice, though.
However, I did find it tedious having to press two keys whenever I wanted a space in my message (one to insert the “symbol” and one to approve my choice of symbol). For the Sony Ericsson phone, which I’m used to, I just have to press one key to get the space in my messages.
Conclusion
However, those are mere niggles and I’m sure you get used to these things if you use the phone long enough or if you’re familiar with Sagem phones.
How would I rate the phone? Quite highly, actually. I still don’t like the white colour of both the covers provided (one has a hibiscus design on it). I expect the colour will be a problem with extended use because dirt and scratches will show up more noticeably.
However, the music player is a definite plus for me. The sound quality of the music played on the phone is really quite good after you’ve optimised the equaliser settings.
Pros: Music player; Bluetooth; random wallpaper.
Cons: Colour of the phone; not for those with larger fingers. |
