Sagem - VS3Sagem VS3 (Vodafone Simply VS3)
The Sagem VS3 is the third phone in the Vodafone "Simply" range after the VS1 and VS2 handsets. Unlike the previous two handsets, the VS3 is a much more conventional looking clamshell phone, but it still takes the "easy to use" features of the other "Simply" handsets and puts them in a a straightforward to use package.
The VS3 is very similar in design to last years Sagem myC5-2. but with an internal antenna, and simpler keypad layout and an slightly improved display. Inside is a 128x160 pixel TFT display in 65,000 colours with a secondary 96x55 pixel monochrome display on the outside. The Sagem VS3 weighs only 75 grams, and come with a charger stand too. The VS3 has a speakerphone function, MMS messaging and some other basic functionality too. There's no camera, Bluetooth, MP3 player or high resolution screen on the Sagem VS3 - it is pretty basic in pure technical terms.
The key feature of the Simply range though is the clear user interface and straightforward design. The VS3 comes with additional shortcut buttons, and the main navigation keys have been stripped down to the the basics. As you can see from the illustration on the right, the VS3 dispenses with obscure little icons and goes for clarity every time.
It's a good looking phone too.. in our view one of the nicest looking handsets in the Sagem range, and it's a good deal more "normal" looking than the bulky VS1 and VS2 handsets. Sagem have cleverly utilised the inside space of the clamshell design to make everything nice and easy to use, without making the handset too big. The elegant design is likely to appeal to many people who weren't even looking for a "simple" handset.
There's definitely something appealing about this no-nonsense approach that makes this handset appealing. Yes, it seems to be based on last year's myC5-2 which frankly was a basic phone back in 2004, but the sheer usability of the VS1, VS2 and now the VS3 handsets means that in our view these are the market leaders in this particular niche.
