Sagem - VS1Sagem VS1
Technological progress is rarely simple and in recent months an number of companies have realised there is a market for a simple phone and thus this week we spent some quality time with Vodafone's simple phone. The phone is based on a Sagem VS1 measuring 123.5 x 52.5 x 24.8 mm and weighing a surprisingly heavy 123 grams, there is a nice, clear, readable 128 x 160 pixel colour screen and a range of loud ringtones.
Nothing much to write home about, but that isn't the point the Sagem VS1 is all about making a phone that's very easy to operate and cuts out all the extras that confuse a fair slice of today's mobile users. Gone is the now ubiquitous camera phone, gone is MP3 playback, there are no additional storage cards and even no Bluetooth!
Certainly a stripped down mobile is music to the ears of Sagem as costs tumble but Vodafone get what they want too, a phone that is fit for calling people and sending text messages. The big chunky keys are easy to operate even for the ham fisted, the screen is bright and the menus simple, the address book is very logical and easy to search, it really is a simple phone.
If you are looking for a mobile to run your business or manage your life while on the move then look away. Try anything beyond making a call or sending an SMS and you'll find the feature very limited or missing. This does however mean a very respectable battery life of 300 hours on standby and 4 hours talk time.
We can see the need for a simple cut down mobile phone and there is certainly a market for this phone, however we do question the wisdom in removing Bluetooth, surely even those who want a simple phone just to make calls may want to use a headset? There is a inbuilt hands free speaker system but this is of no use in car and only performs well in a quiet environment.
Overall this phone did exactly what it says on the tin, it's simple and makes calls and sends text's, nothing else no WiFi no Avantgo no nothing and that respect we hated it, but that's because we are all gadget nuts. However if you are looking for a phone you can operate and the complexity of microwaves scares you then this is the mobile for you, the Vodafone simple phone or Sagem VS1. |
