Philips - 859
Philips 859

If there's any mobile phone brand lesser known and than Sagem, its gotta be Philips. We've all used Philips products " DVD players, TVs, music systems, maybe even irons and computer monitors " but when it comes to mobile phones.. "Philips??"

Even though Sagem came in much much later than Philips in the mobile market in India, more people know about Sagem than Philips. I'd often wonder why that was the case. Unsuccessful marketing campaigns? Lack of a marketing strategy? Did they make the phones and then decide that it was a bad idea to even get into the field? Or did the phones just plain and simple suck?

The 859 is a pretty sleek looking phone, I must say. To hold it in your hand is an experience you have to take. Holding this phone in your hand is more comfortable than holding the Motorola RAZR V3. Its smoothened, polished edges and fine curves are appealing and softening. Opening or closing the flap takes very little effort, and is very smooth.

Even when the phone is closed, it doesn't feel too thick and slides in and out of your jeans pockets quite easily (8.8cm x 4.6cm x 2.3 cm). Talking on the phone is also very comfortable, since the phone is so light (only 94gm). The buttons are laid out fine, and are easy to click and get used to. Though I thought the * and # buttons were a little small, they're still alright. The camera is also positioned quite well on the upper half of the top flap, so your finger(s) will not accidently come in the way like they did on the RAZR. I'd like to give this phone full points on ergonomics.

The display on the inside is a standard 65k color 128x160 display. It looks fine indoors, but in the sunlight you'll have to squint a bit. The quality if the display is just passable. The size vs. resolution ratio is a little off here, so the grid is visible and the pictures don't look sharp at all. Moreover, all the icons used throughout the menus are very low-res, so they don't help either. On the top flap, there's also an external 4k color 94x64 display. The quality if this display is even worse for 4k, but the size is quite good for an external display.

The camera on the phone is a regular VGA resolution CMOS based camera. The quality of the pictures was alright, no great shakes. It wasn't absolute rubbish either. The night mode seemed to be quite effective in this phone. The phone supports IrDA so you can take pictures and send them to other phones or PCs directly without using the PC connectivity software. The phone offers around 9mb of memory that is shared between all the applications. There is no memory slot for expanding the memory. On the brighter side, the photos taken with the phone can be viewed on TV using an optional TV out cable.

The user interface of the phone is quite bizarre to use at first, and continued being bizarre for the next few days that I used the phone. There's just one "OK" button that doubles up as a menu button, and a C button that goes into Delete most of the time, and that's not what you want to do when you're asked a simple Yes/No question. To view pictures in the list, you have to click the right direction key instead of OK, which is quite disillusioning even for someone who has used a lot of different phone with different Uis. I had such a bad experience trying to type SMSes, that I haven't replied to four days of my messages and people are wondering if I'm ignoring them on purpose. (Of course, some of them I really am ignorig!). Navigating around the call log list for missed calls and calling the numbers back or deleting them is a crazy procedure. And the singular OK button doesn't do much to help. The phone can get quite unusable at times when you need to do stuff in a hurry.

The phone didn't offer a lot of talk/stand by time on its 600 mAh Li-Ion battery. We clocked around just around two to three days with very faint camera usage, and barely any other fiddling around with the phone. Not that I was quite successful in trying to explore much of the phone's features anyway.

For Rs. 9890 (okay, 10k) this doesn't seem like too bad a phone. It looks good, and feels good. It has some decent features and a usable camera, IrDA, and a fair amount of space to store the pictures. But the UI is extremely weird to get used to, and even after that, its quite a never ending nightmare to hang around with. What do I think? I think you should stick to your Nokia's, that's what I think!
