Pantech - G800
Pantech G800

Korean handphone manufacturer Pantech has made great advances since entering the Singapore market last year. The G800 marks another milestone in the company's history, being its first model to offer Bluetooth connectivity while maintaining the same quality workmanship and strong multimedia features. If only the Bluetooth worked better, the G800 would be a strong rival to heavyweights like Sony Ericsson and Nokia.

Design
The G800 is attractively decked out in a two-toned silver finish that accentuates its slim profile. While some would find such an appearance banal, they would definitely think otherwise of this handset's external display. Offering 260K colors, the 128 x 128-pixel TFT is much larger and more color-intensive compared with other clamshells in the market.

Flip open the lid and one is greeted with a 128 x 160-pixel, 260K-color main display. Images are beautifully rendered and the bright screen is highly visible even under direct sunlight. Unlike previous offerings where the keys tend to be crammed and flushed with the surface of the phone, this model is much improved. Buttons possess sufficient height and tactile feel and users will find the widely spaced keys a joy to use.

As we have come to expect, this Pantech's build quality is exceptional.

Features
The G800 offers a highly responsive scroll menu system while the directional pad and softkeys provide quick access to common applications. Sending out SMS is intuitive other than the fact that this phone does not save new words entered into the T9 dictionary. This translates into tedious single-tap texting if you constantly use words that are not found in the database.

Sound-wise, the G800's 64-chord polyphony will not disappoint music aficionados. Ringtones are melodious and easily audible in a crowded area even with the volume set at half strength.

Camera functions are likewise impressive. Other than the basic camera options like tweaking brightness and zoom settings, a mini LED flash brightens up photos taken in dim conditions. Furthermore, creative users will be pleased with the ability to add frames to pictures and the multi-shot mode which captures nine images in rapid succession.

Connectivity
Pantech has touted the G800 as its first Bluetooth-enabled handset. Unfortunately its main selling point is also its Achilles heel. Although the phone can be paired up easily with other Bluetooth devices, file transfer proves unworkable. We attempted to transfer pictures taken by the G800 to a Nokia 7610, a Sony Ericsson T610 and Bluetooth-enabled laptops, but all to no avail. We did, however, manage to use the Bluetooth connection with our Sony Ericsson HBH-65 Bluetooth headset. It delivered acceptable voice quality.

Other connectivity options include GPRS Class 10, Java support and WAP 1.2.1. However, infrared connectivity is absent.

Reception, Battery Life And SAR
We experienced no issues with reception or voice quality. The battery life afforded us three days on moderate usage.

The highest Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) value recorded for this model was 0.706W/kg, which meets international requirements concerning exposure to radio waves.

Conclusion
The G800 retails at S$888 (US$584.04) without contract. It is a comprehensive phone, offering great sight and sound. Had its Bluetooth been better implemented, this would have made a great executive mobile.
