Pantech - G600Pantech G600
This clamshell from Pantech is designed to appeal to the female crowd and gives Samsung a run for the money with its comparable features and price tag. Unfortunately it doesn’t match up to Samsung’s quality and performance.
Design
Outright, the burgundy metallic finish and soft curvy design of this clamshell pretty much define its target market. In addition, female customers have a choice of regular silver and blue.
This phone features dual 260K TFT that produces brilliant colors. The onboard camera is well protected in a subtly designed glass frame so you won’t need to worry about scratching the lens. A flash is also available to assist in lowlight conditions.
The top half of the clamshell is elegantly encased in silver with its external display set within a mirror finish frame. While this is real pretty, it also means it smudges easily. Like other Korean clamshells, this Pantech includes an antenna that protrudes out of the unit. However, it's slightly more elegant with its tapered design and chrome tip.
You get a sense of déjà vu when you flip open the G600 as its layout is nearly identical to Samsung's offerings. However, the top buttons are situated way too close to the hinge and therefore result in frustrating navigation. This is a drawback as the target group tends to have longer nails. Due to the phone's small size, the four-way keys are also a tad difficult to use as they are quite crammed.
Features
It's a nice touch that all the icons are beautifully rendered. In addition, nearly all the interfaces are customizable, although the choice is limited. You can even choose the animation you prefer when you receive or make a call. The four-way navigational button lets you access functions with a single tap.
The flash-enabled VGA camera comes with a few nifty features such as multi-shot, sticker shots and other effects. Apart from adjusting the brightness, you can zoom, flip the screen and select the resolution straight from the picture-taking screen. This is a great convenience as many other phones require you to exit the viewfinder mode to change these settings. The flash also activates itself when needed. For self-portraits, you can fall back on the front TFT. The quality of the pictures is reminiscent of early first-generation digital cameras that output pictures with grainy pixels. The praise, of course, goes to the 260K-color screen which shows up everything beautifully.
Even for a non-Pantech user, the menu is relative easy to get used to. To access the phone directory, you have to either perform a Name or Group search, which is slightly different from other mobiles. One horrible quirk is the clear button’s sensitivity during texting. When you are typing an SMS and need to erase a letter, more often than not, you end up deleting the entire message instead.
Sporting 64-chord polyphony, the 24 default melodies come in a variety of tunes, voices and even bell sounds. The voice recorder is good for storing 30-second audio clips. The playback is very good quality with minimum background noise. Unfortunately, there isn’t an option to output it via the speaker.
Reception, Battery Life And SAR
We encountered no issues with the reception and voice clarity during the review period. The 680mAh Lithium-ion battery achieved a standby of about two days on moderate use. Thankfully, a spare cell is included in the package.
This mobile meets international requirements concerning exposure to radio waves with a highest recorded Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) value of 0.73W/kg.
Conclusion
The G600 retails at S$598 (US$393.02) without contract currently. Compared to the similarly priced SGH-E600, this may be a tough sell as Samsung offers infrared connectivity and far superior battery performance. That said, this Pantech is no slouch as it contains all the features you need and entices with a good accessory bundle. |
