Overview
Looking something like the 8250, the Nokia 6510 has been designed with the business person in mind. For those who have used or are currently using a Nokia 6210 will find this phone to be a worthwhile upgrade - considering the stack of new features available.
The first thing I noticed was the similarity between the 6510 and 8250 - with these being mostly physical. Both phones bear a blue backlight, keypad design and a similar overall size (that is, dimension-wise). As the late 6000-series Nokia phones have been positioned towards business users, such characteristics being found on the 6510 is no surprise. It’s about time this segment of phone users get some sort of aesthetic improvements! :)
On starting up the phone, I found the blue light to be well distributed. Instead of the screen being lit on both left and right hand sides of the display, it is now done from the bottom instead - improving the clarity and lighting up the screen up more efficiently. The blue backlight colour is something like the watches that have the Indigo lights.
In terms of physically interaction, the 6510 was a pleasure to use. Although the phone is slightly thicker than both the 8250 and 8310, it sat in my hand comfortably and aided me in using the phone’s keypad. Typing messages on this phone is slightly easier than on the 8310 - with the keys being marginally smaller and further apart from each other (minimising the chances of pressing the wrong button).
For those who have used the 8310, you will find that the software on the 6510 is very much similar in most aspects. Functions such as voice commands, voice recorder, dynamic phone book, infrared, WAP over GPRS, FM radio, and personal message folders are some of the features that are shared by both these phones. Many will welcome these features on a business market-orientated phone - as phones from other manufacturers already carry some of these characteristics.
"Beige as the sales package colour. In addition four Xpress-on front & back covers available as accessories"
One other significant difference I found was the improvement in screen resolution. Where the resolution of a screen becomes finer, text can be displayed in more detail than before - which has also led to the possibility of fitting more lines on the screen. On the other hand, this has led to the default text size being slightly smaller than before - some may find this as being a problem, but I’m alright with it!
A new feature on the 6510 is the wallet function within the ‘Extras’ menu. This allows a user to enter information that assists in speeding up purchases made using the built-in WAP browser - including user information, credit card details, shipping information (address, phone number, email address), billing and receipt delivery details. Up to five cards (or wallet profiles) can be set up - where all this sensitive information is protected by a wallet code (of 4 to 10 numeric digits).
Other useful features include an easy-to-browse month-view calendar and an automatic keylock that locks the phone’s buttons after a preset interval. Average usage times for the phone are around 4-5 days’ worth of standby and talk time of up to 4-5 hours.
Major differences...
"The wallet feature on the 6510 allows the storage of information securely"
WAP over GPRS
A highlight of the 6510 is the availability of WAP over GPRS - allowing for fast WAP page browsing and providing the ability to seamlessly browse these same pages without the need for disconnection. Whenever a call is received, the GPRS connection can be put on hold - where the same data session can be resumed after the call.
Electronic wallet
The wallet feature on the 6510 allows the storage of information securely that can facilitate purchases using the phone’s WAP browser. Information such as personal user information, credit card details, shipping information (address, phone number, email address), billing and receipt delivery details can be entered. Up to five cards (or wallet profiles) can be set up - where all this sensitive information is protected by a wallet code (of 4 to 10 numeric digits).
Longer battery life
Using the same batteries as previous 8000-series Nokia phones (BLB-2 Lithium-ion battery), the 6510 was able to provide me with an average standby time of approximately 30% longer than previously. Talk time boasted the same improvements - with a maximum continuous call time logged at around 4½ to 5 hours with the supplied headset. Previously, I was able to get only a maximum of 3½ to 4 hours on a single battery under the same circumstances.
New higher resolution LCD screen
The 6510 comes with a high resolution LCD screen that allows for more text to be displayed on the phone’s display. Although the screen’s physical size is comparable to an 8310’s, the font size has become somewhat smaller because of this increase in screen resolution.
Automatic keylock
This must be one long awaited function! The 6510 makes available the ability to set the keylock to activate automatically after a preset period defined by the user. For those who forget to turn their phone’s keylock back on after completing a call, and accidentally make calls when the phone is in their back pocket, this function will be extremely useful.
New Xpress-On™ covers
Although not as exciting as those found on the 8310, the 6510 offers similar front-back covers but in several different metallic colours (similar to those for the 8250).
"The 6510 allows you to store multiple phone numbers and comments for one single phone book entry"
Phone book improvements
Thanks to the use of dynamic memory, adopted from the Nokia 6200 series phones, the 6510 allows you to store multiple phone numbers and comments for one single phone book entry. A maximum of up to 500 names with 3 numbers and 2 text entries - which can be an address, web page address, email address, or just any note you may want to tag with that.
FM Radio
The 6510 comes with a built-in FM radio - which will prove useful thanks to the dual headset provided within the sales package. Audio clarity gained during phone conversations and, of course, FM radio broadcasts is achieved through the provided dual headset.
Enhanced calendar functions and to-do list
Although adopting the standard calendar function found in most Nokia phones, the 6510 boasts a full calendar-month view (similar to that of the 6210) allowing for easy browsing of dates and appointments. A full 4 weeks can be displayed on the screen. The 6510 also has a “to-do list” function which allows for jotting down things that may need your attention at some point in time. Different priority levels can be set and the notes can be linked to the phone’s calendar function to act as reminders as well..
Multi-functional headset (HDD-1)
The headset provides the user with entertainment similar to a Walkman (i.e. two earphones) but boasts the added functionality of accepting calls and using the headset to talk on the phone also. Having the person calling you talking into both of your ears is something different - and one will find that the microphone on this headset provides a very clear conversation compared to the previous Nokia headset and very prone to noises!
New voice functions
In addition to voice dialling, the 6510 offers a voice recorder that can take up to three minutes of voice notes or telephone conversations. Recorded notes can also be played back whilst in a call where the person on the other side can listen on as well. Other functions, including profile changing (e.g. from ‘general’ to ‘silent’), turning the radio on and off and tuning it, and activating infrared, can be set - but a maximum of five voice functions can only be set at the one time.
Timed profiles
The timed profile function allows for a user to set the duration of a specific profile to remain active - allowing for the phone to revert to the original profile once the time set is up. This function is especially useful if you want your phone to revert to its standard ringing volume if you’ve set the silent profile and worried that you’ll forget switching it back!
"Back of the phone"
Call logging improvements
Adopting this from the 33xx Nokia phones, the 6510 can now log calls that do not have a number on them as well (aka “Private Number”). This apply to both missed and received calls - but probably more relevant to the former. Additionally, the phone brings the number of last dialled numbers up to a total of 20 phone numbers; and a call summary option has been added allowing you to see how much time you’ve spent on your last call.
SMS handling improvements - personal folders and extra space
The 6510 allows you to create folders to store your SMS messages via moving them from the inbox and into the designated personal folder created. They can be moved back and forth depending on your liking. Also, the dynamic memory featured on the 6510 allows for the storing of up to 150 text messages or 50 picture messages - not having to worry about your SIM card’s storage becoming full!
In Summary
The 6510 isn’t really very much different to the 8310 (if you’ve previously used it) - except for the fact that the phone is much more stable in terms of its software, that it has a higher resolution screen and a not-so-attractive Xpress-On™ cover design. But the phone is aimed towards the business person and not primarily for show-off!
If you’re the person who wants a reliable phone that has the right tools to keep you on your toes both in business and pleasure (for example, WAP over GPRS, FM Radio, Calendar and to-do list functions) without sacrificing too much battery power, the 6510 is just the phone for the job. |
