Overview
When you think about all those mobile phones out there that make the claim it’s shock-proof, water-proof and dust-proof, the first thing that really comes to mind is the bulkiness and extreme weight of such a phone. Well, yes - you could say those are the trade-off factors if I was to choose a phone that comes with such insulation. But what if I just want a phone like everyone else’s - where it may be all compactly designed with those groovy curves and “wow” phone features. Probably the only way is to buy another phone that just gives me what I want!
But now there is an alternative. The new Nokia 5210 is a phone that tries to combine both durability, usability and styling into the one handset - thereby letting you use it whether you’re just going to work, out with friends or playing hard. Weighing in at 92 grams, which is substantially lighter than phones that offer superior protection against the elements and accidents, the 5210 provides the friendly and standard Nokia user interface and features - plus some new ones as well.
"The entire cover encompasses two sectinos"
One of the most noticeable things about the 5210 is the new Xpress-on™ cover design concept. The entire cover encompasses two sections - the top (earpiece and display cover) and the bottom (keypad area) - which snaps on together to coat the main phone unit. The original cover, Burned Orange, is the only colour sold as a 5210 sales package. Four other Xpress-on™ cover colours are available - and different top and bottom covers can be interchangeably swapped as they have a common fitting.
After opening up the 5210 box, the first thing I found about the phone was its weight - being somewhat lighter than other similar phone models that provide similar insulation. Removing the Xpress-on™ cover was easy - after knowing how to do it of course! The 5210 used the same battery found on the 8000-series phones - which also contributed towards the overall light weight. The 5210’s design, casing material and overall weight made holding the phone a comfortable experience.
The orange backlight is not amber in colour - but orange. The amount of illumination was very sufficient as it had a hint of white in it as well. Moving around the phone, the menus and functions were very much similar to any other Nokia phone. The buttons on the phones were not at all hard to press. Unfortunately, I found the phone’s software to have a slight lag that may cause delayed reactions while using some of its functions (when playing a game, for example).
Some of the new and interesting features of the phone include the built-in WAP 1.1 browser, screen saver option (with one displaying a large digital clock display - very useful), timed profiles, concatenated SMS messages, rhythmic backlight and vibrate feature, “vibrate then ring” feature, automatic keyguard lock feature with added security feature, picture editor, built-in thermometer, and a Chinese Lunar Date feature.
By the way, we also tested the phone by bumping and soaking it. The phone was comfortable with both a rugged and hard flat surface where it made a slight bounce on each point of contact. Water was sprayed on it, and the phone was put under a running tap - no problems with insulation. The phone needed a good wipe after that though - especially the parts where the two Xpress-on™ covers met.
Major differences...
"The phone is locked until the phone's security code is entered"
New durable Xpress-on™ cover design (top and bottom)
Making a snugly fit around the 5210’s main phone unit, the new Xpress-on™ cover design provides a level of near-complete protection when it comes to water splashes and bumps and bruising. Tops and bottoms of the covers can be interchanged with other colours to make the phone fit into your mood of day.
Automatic keyguard with security feature
For those people who have been waiting for an auto-keylock function, then it’s good news for you. The 5210 can now be set to lock the keypad automatically after a preset time, and a code lock feature can be enabled as well. When the keyguard security is activated, the phone is locked until the phone’s security code is entered on unlocking. Three consecutive incorrect attempts will lock out any entries for the subsequent 10-15 minutes. The phone can still be answered when this security feature is enabled.
"The phone is well-designed to protect from the water soaking into the phone"
Timed profiles
An option is available where a user can set a specific profile to be deactivated after a preset time period. For example, if you are using the General profile and you would like the phone to be on the Silent profile until you wake up at 8:00am the next morning, you simply choose the Silent profile option from the ‘profiles’ menu and enter the time you want the profile to be deactivated. The General profile, in this instance, will be reactivated at 8:00am. Useful when you still want to hear your calls - but after when you’re supposed to wake up!
Screen saver function (full display profile logos)
A different screen saver can be selected for each individual profile on the 5210 - allowing for easy profile identification and variety. One of the screen savers, a digital clock, can be selected where it shows the current time using by using the entire display. A set of still and animated screen savers are available for selection.
Picture editor and ringtone composer
The 5210 comes with features allowing you to customise both your collection of clipart and ringtones. A picture editor is available for the creating and editing of picture messages which can be saved on the phone’s memory. The composer allows a user to create their favourite ringtones by entering sequences of notes and saving it.
Rhythmic backlight and vibrate feature
The backlight and vibrate feature of the 5210 can be set to flash or vibrate in sync with the ringing tone currently selected by the user.
"Side of the phone"
“Vibrate then ring” and “silent and reject” features
An additional option available in the incoming alerts for the 5210 is the “vibrate then ring” feature - allowing call notifications to first vibrate, and then only ring when the phone is still unanswered. Alternatively, the “silent and reject” feature allows a call to be silenced when ringing (as you may want to finish up something before answering and not want the ringer to go off until then) and subsequently having the choice of whether to reject the call or not.
WAP over CSD
The availability of a WAP browser on the 5210 means that you can browse WAP pages and keep your Nokia games up to date through the game services menu. The phone is capable of WAP connections over CSD (circuit-switched data) of up to 14.4 kbps.
Concatenated SMS & picture message support
Longer SMS messages can be written thanks to concatenated message support - whereby a message can be as long as up to 3 standard SMS messages. Also included are preloaded picture messages allowing for a more colourful dialogue.
Calendar function
A standard calendar function is available on the 5210 allowing for up to 100 notes and the option of having these same notes repeated over time.
Chinese Lunar Date function
A somewhat useful feature (especially for Chinese people), the Chinese Lunar Date function allows a user to check the current date by simply going into this function. Alternatively, if you want to check to see a specific date’s Lunar calendar equivalent, entering a Gregorian calendar’s day, month and year will bring up the respective Lunar date. This function is only accessible when the phone’s current language setting is either Traditional or Simplified Chinese.
"The 5210 is slightly taller than the 8250"
Thermometer function
Another special feature of the 5210 is the thermometer function - which allows a user to measure the current temperature of the environment that the phone is in. The readings, in both Celsius and Fahrenheit, blink the current temperature reading - and the final reading is displayed when the blinking stops. It does take a while to measure - but it works.
Countdown timer and stopwatch functions
Another few “extras” that come on the 5210 are the countdown timer and stopwatch functions. The countdown feature allows a user to preset a time that the phone is to count down to, where it will sound an audible alert once it has reached zero. The stopwatch feature comes with split and lap timing. Both functions can be left running in the background when you access other phone functions.
Infrared port
And to top it off, the 5210 also comes with an infrared port - allowing for the uploading of logos and graphics, communications between a PC and having the ability to play games with another compatible phone. A handy feature to have!
Problems/Issues?
Slow response to keypresses
Similar to the 8855, the 5210 has a problem with keeping up with user input through the keypad. In situations such as when a game is being played, or just simply typing an SMS message, there are times that the responses from the phone are not as immediate as they could be. This is a problem that some may find irritating - but some may not realise. One reason for this may be that there are too many features available on the phone, which is starting to slow down everything else at the same time.
In Summary
For those considering getting something different, or if you’re wanting something that you can take on a bush walk or day out on the beach, then the 5210 could be the phone for you. This phone offers very much similar functionalities as other current Nokia models (such as the 8250) - but with the addition of various features and also coming in a more durable casing.
For what’s currently available in the market (that is, the market for phones that have added protection from accidents and the elements), the 5210 wins my choice of phone! :) |
