Overview
After being given a facelift, but at the same time retaining similar curvatures as its predecessors, the Nokia 3410 comes as the major upgrade for the 33xx-series of phones. As like many previous Nokia 3000-series phones, this model introduces several new features that will be found on future Nokia phones - with some of these including a “download” menu for customisable features, and support for Java MIDlets (applets) thanks to implementation of J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition).
For those living in the Asia-Pacific region, you may find it hard to purchase one of these phones - because the 3410 is only officially available in European and African markets. If it wasn’t for the 3350, I think this phone may just have a chance of making it out to this region of the world!
New/outstanding features
One of the biggest additions to the 3410 would be the Java support offered - allowing for third-party applications to be used on this phone. Also, access to WAP services have been enhanced thanks to a new ‘download’ menu allowing access to downloadable tones, games and images.
A standard keypad is provided with the 3410 - one which is similarly used on other Nokia series phones, which rids the Navi-key interface (love it or hate it?). The resolution of the screen has also been vastly improved, supporting finer text and graphics. This is achieved through an increased number of screen pixels based on a similar screen size as the 3310/3330.
Physical aspects
The external shape of the 3410 is virtually the same as that of both the 3310 and 3330, where the differences lie in the redesigned screen and keypad area, which have both been given a softer touch in conjunction with the “Green Cloud” coloured Xpress-on cover. I personally find the overall design of the 3410 quite attractive.
Some may be saying “why does the 3410 look so much like the 3315?” Apart from the difference in the keypad area and Xpress-on cover, both phones are exactly the same - physically.
User Interface (UI)
Gone is the Navi-key and in comes the standard keypad interface found on other Nokia phones. I have never gotten used to just having one single button controlling a phone’s features - and find it extremely irritating when I don’t have a second choice on the screen. Anyway… the two soft keys provide similar menu navigation techniques as per other Nokia phones.
Physically, the keypad has a softer feel than those on the 3310 and 3330. If you’re afraid that a possible result is a loss in keypad tactility, then let me assure you that this is not the case. Although the keypad is not as “clicky”, it definitely passes the message-typing test! :)
Making and receiving calls
The 3410 has been given a set of answer/reject buttons and two soft keys, which also gives users greater accessibility than ever before (on 3000-series phones) to in-call features such as hold and mute. In addition, a built-in phonebook with a 200-entry capacity is provided on the 3410 - with access to it as simple as using the up/down arrow buttons (not needing to go into the menu before opening the phonebook!)
Messaging
Similar to the 3310/3330, the 3410 supports concatenated (long) SMS messages, SMS chat and picture messaging features. With WAP becoming a standard feature, this feature is being adopted for the downloading of picture messages from Nokia’s own “Club Nokia” web site.
Battery life
With the provided lithium-ion battery, a user should be able to average approximately 2-3 days’ standby on average usage, and around 2-3 hours’ worth of talk time.
Major features...
Java MIDlets (applets) support
Wireless Java becomes a reality with the 3410, which allows a user to download small Java applets, called MIDlets, which allows third-party applications to be executed directly from the handset. Such MIDlets are not just for games, but also available for a genre of applications with some allowing for interactivity through a WAP connection too! The 3410 comes with a pre-installed Java game, called Munkiki.
Replacement of Navi-key interface with standard keypad
Usability of Java MIDlets may rely on a slightly more sophisticated keypad than just the ones used previously on Nokia 3000-series phones. In any case, the 3410 comes with a standard 12-key numeric pad, answer/reject and up/down arrows, and two soft keys located right below the LCD screen.
Higher resolution LCD screen
The 3410 has been given a new type of LCD screen that provides for a higher resolution than any previously featured on a Nokia 3000-series phone (apart from the one found on the 3350). Result of such an upgrade provides the user with more detailed graphics and finer display of text - especially useful when running Java MIDlets that would prefer such a screen for graphics.
WAP over CSD, with Push Inbox support
WAP is certainly becoming the standard for Internet access on the move, considering that probably no other Nokia phone released in the future would support this feature. The 3410 comes with a WAP browser supporting standard dial-up speeds, which also comes with the Push Inbox feature. This allows subscription services to send WAP links - containing updated information - to the handset as messages, which can activate the WAP browser on selection or simply discarded if chosen to.
Concatenated (long) SMS, chat and picture messaging features
A standard set of messaging options are provided with the 3410 - including the ability to compose long SMS messages, conduct chat sessions from the convenience of your mobile phone, and the ability to send more than just words with the picture messages option. New picture messages can be downloaded using the “download” menu feature - which connects to the Club Nokia website.
T9 predictive text input
And without T9, messaging wouldn’t be what it is really, would it? :)
“Download” menu for tones, games and images
A new “Download” menu item featured (in addition to the “Applications” menu for Java applets of course) allows for a user to attain ringtones, games and images (picture messages and screen savers) via WAP from the Club Nokia website. This menu makes it easy for people who just simply want to download such material without the need to go into menus after menus just to look for the downloading option.
Picture and ringtone composer
The 3410 also comes with a ringtone composer and a picture editor for creating your own masterpieces. A user can also send their creations to other users (with compatible phones) via SMS.
Animated and static screen savers
Screen saver features have been slightly improved on the 3410 with a selection of highly-animated screen savers and improved support for simple animated screen savers (there’s an analogue and digital clock screen saver as well!). Yes, you are still able to use those picture messages you love as screen savers on the 3410 - and you can also download new screen savers that become available on the Club Nokia website.
The “normal” type screen savers will be displayed on the screen until a user interacts with the phone or if a call, message or warning signal is displayed. For ones that are animated under the “normal” type, these will remain animated for approximately five minutes where they will become non-moving. “Animated” type screen savers will also remain animated for five minutes, which then will bring back the normal standby screen with the network name or operator logo on it.
For those who choose to use the text screen saver (under animated), it provides the option for a user to put in a personal text message to be displayed instead (similar to that Windows one, where you can change the message and it moves across the screen).
Large internal phonebook
The number of phone number entries that can be made on the 3410 has doubled since the 3330. In other words, you can now store up to 200 phone numbers on the 3410 - and that doesn’t include what you can store on your SIM card as well! :)
Rhythmic backlight feature
The 3410 also comes with a rhythmic backlight feature (similar to the one found on the 5210), which makes the phone’s top and bottom section backlights blink at different intervals and matching the beat and rhythm of the ringtone being played. A cute and innovative feature (which I hope doesn’t shorten the life of your phone’s backlights!)
Automatic keyguard and lock feature
A useful feature that should have been made available a long time ago is the automatic keyguard feature, which gives a user the option to have the phone automatically enable the phone’s keypad lock at a set period of inactivity. Another keyguard feature that can become quite useful is the keyguard code, which prevents a person from simply unlocking the keypad with the simple menu-then-star sequence. When the keyguard lock is activated, a user would have to enter the security code of the phone to unlock the keypad.
Problems/Issues?
Typing speeds for messages slow down when typing long messages
If typing messages over the 160-character limit is your habit and you tend to type quite quickly as well, you may find that the phone starts to react to your keypresses slower as you reach the end of the long SMS limit. This has been an issue since the days of the 3310 when concatenated SMS messages first came out, but may not affect those people who just type simple and short messages.
In Summary
This major upgrade does deserve some looking-into - that is, if you are looking for a market-entry phone that has a lot of nifty features. Java compatibility is one sure feature that will attract a lot of attention with this phone, since it’s one of the few phone around which has this and also being affordable at the same time. Other feature improvements built into this phone have come at the right time, making the 3410 a worthwhile candidate for a feasible upgrade. |
