Overview

When I first learnt about the Nokia 3350, my first thoughts were “another 3300-series phone” and “is it going to be any different from the previous two” (that is, the 3310 and 3330). Also, when looking at the list of features available on the 3350 at the Nokia web site, the only real and obvious incentives for anyone getting the phone is the picture editor function and the new set of games. Oh, and also not forgetting that it features a new style Xpress-On™ cover :)

One of the great improvements realised was the larger-sized screen and its improvement in resolution. An extra line is made available compared to it predecessors. But in some cases, the font size used throughout the 3350 is larger than before as well - making it easy to read what’s printed on the screen.

"Another major change is the removal of the Navi key"

Another major change is the removal of the Navi key - with this being replaced with the selection keys on opposite sides of the screen (found on other Nokia phones), plus the standard answer/hang-up-green/red buttons as well.

The basic functionality of this phone is very similar to any other previous Nokia 3300-series phone - with some of these including concatenated SMS, SMS chat, voice dialling, profile logos (or screen saver), reminders, WAP over CSD (circuit switched data), ringtone composer, and a standard set of games. The addition of a picture editor and three new games (Dance2Music, Link5 and Magic Draw) and customisable SMS tones are welcomed features - but does this justify an upgrade to a 3350 from a previous 3300-series model?

"The phone's weight, dimension and battery life are pretty much the same"

Other features also include a Chinese lunar date function is available which allows the lookup of a specific lunar day by entering a Gregorian date. The Chinese lunar date function is only accessible when the phone’s language setting is either Traditional or Simplified Chinese. A rhythmic backlight function gives the phone a special effect where the backlight flashes with the beats and rhythm of the current ringtone being played.

What more can I say? The phone’s weight, dimension and battery life are pretty much the same - with talk time of approximately 3-4 hours. Most of what you’ll get is pretty much the same, plus those added features. But with each new 3300-series phone from Nokia, there are bound to be added improvements - since each new 3300-series phone acts as an introduction to new features.

Major differences...

"Picture editor that allows a user to draw graphics such as picture messages and profile logos"

Larger screen with improved screen resolution

The 3350 boasts a slightly larger screen than its predecessors in tandem with higher level of resolution - allowing for text and graphics to be displayed more finely and in greater detail. This has also allowed for slightly-larger text that makes reading what’s on the screen easier.

Picture editor

A new feature of the 3350 is the picture editor that allows a user to draw graphics such as picture messages and profile logos. These same graphics can be sent over SMS to another Nokia user who can save them for their personal use.

WAP over CSD (circuit switched data)

The WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) function allows a user to access the Internet through its WAP browser. In addition, the games function of the 3350 uses the WAP capabilities to download new game packs (made available by Nokia) and upload high scores.

Concatenated SMS messages and chat feature

Similar to previous models in the 3300-series, the 3350 allows for SMS messages of up to 459 characters (approximately the length of three standard SMS messages). This means that more can be expressed in a single message! Also, the chat feature lets a user maintain a dialogue between another through SMS.

Rhythmic backlight feature

This unlisted feature synchronises the 3350’s backlights with the ringtone being used - blinking along with its rhythm and beat!

New set of games

The 3350 has been loaded with three new games - Dance2Music, Link5 and Magic Draw - which utilises the larger and sharper screen to provide for a better gaming experience. Two old classics, Bumper and Snake II, remain available for play.

"The 3350 has been loader with three new games"

Ringtone composer with new customisable SMS tones

The 3350 allows for the creation of ringtones - whether they are new or existing pieces that one wants to have as their phone’s melody. Up to seven ringtones can be created. In addition, all ringtones (including both preset and customisable ones) on the phone can be set up to be used for SMS in addition to the four presets.

Reminder function

A reminder function has been added to the 3350 which allows a user to enter notes that can be prioritised according to its importance. These same reminders can be sent as SMS messages without the need of re-typing them.

Chinese lunar date function

This function allows a user to enter the current Gregorian date which will show the respective lunar calendar date. This feature can only be used when the phone is set to either Traditional or Simplified Chinese in the phone’s language selection.

Problems/Issues?

"Size comparison between 3350 & 8250"

Software slower than previous 3300 models

The addition of more functions onto the 3350 meant a sacrifice of responsiveness and speed from the phone’s menus. This is especially evident when a game is played (for example, Bumper) where keypresses take slightly longer than usual for them to react.

In Summary

The 3350 is an improvement from previous models bringing along some new and innovative functions that provides a practical reason to get this phone. This is especially the case when compared to the release of the 3330 - where differences, compared to the 3310, were only minor.

At the end of the day, it really depends on what you really want out of a phone. This phone pretty much provides very basic functionality - but at the same time added features that make it both fun and practical.

But with the downside from packaging this phone with all these features being a surrender of responsiveness, Nokia needs to realise that a new series of phones is imminent if it decides to add more and more features. The 5510 is an example of a phone that has been packed with great features - but the cost of being extremely unresponsive and slow.
