Motorola - V635Last year Motorola released the V600 gaining widespread fame following a simple formula; building a state-of-the-art clamshell with well-rounded features packaged in a conservative clean design.
[AD]
Going on to have a lifespan of well over a year when the industry retires most phones in a matter of months, Motorola now hopes the achieve the same popularity with a successor, the newly released V635.
Making significant improvements over the now outdated V600, the V635 leverages the power of its 1.23-megapixel camera for 8X digital zooming, EDGE for high-speed transfer rates, and quad-band functionality for global roaming capabilities.
Design
Encased in a conservative metallic shell, the V635 offers a sophisticated feel uncompromised by unnecessary flash. Retaining similar design traits from the V600, the V635 weighs 134 g and measures 89 x 49 x 25 mm when closed; a bit larger than average phones on the market.
Featuring a 96 x 80 external screen, the 4K-color front panel displays time, signal and battery strength, phone status information, and even messages to notify users of incoming calls. Adjacent to the LCD, the lens and flash to a 1.23-megapixel camera peeks out, able to capture images at up to 1280 x 960 px in resolution.
Removing the front cover reveals a TransFlash memory card slot (with microSD adapter) underneath for expandable storage.
A Smart Key along the left side performs operations by predicting likely actions to follow, such as selecting a menu item after it has been highlighted. Nearby, Volume Keys adjust earpiece and ringer volumes during calls and standby times.
On the right side, functions to record messages and initiate voice dialing are activated via a conveniently placed Voice Key.
Incorporated within the top edge, a 2.5 mm jack is used for wired handsfree access, while a USB-capable data port is hidden beneath a rubber cap.
The charger is plugged into the Connector Port on the bottom, along with optional accessory attachments that may be purchased.
Opened, a 176 x 220 px 65K-color screen is revealed; positioned above a 5-way navigation keypad surrounded by Send, Menu, Camera, Power / End, and Left and Right soft keys. Well designed, a numeric keypad utilizes iTAP predictive text to provide quick and convenient text messaging.
Out of the box, the Motorola V635 comes with a standard 780 mAh Li-Ion battery, travel charger, hands-free stereo headset, 16 MB TransFlash memory card, microSD adaptor, USB cable, software CD, and user manual.
Camera
Pressing the Camera Key converts the internal screen into a viewfinder, also displaying setting such as camera mode, timer, flash, and available memory.
[AD]
Taking pictures from a vertical orientation, the Motorola V635 is built with an integrated 1.23-megapixel camera; capable of capturing photos at up to 1280 x 960 px in resolution. But photo quality can also be adjusted between QQVGA (160 x 120 px), QVGA (320 x 240 px), and VGA (640 x 480 px) resolutions.
Large enough to make adequate prints, users won't be left without a digital camera at impromptu moments. Although decent in bright outdoor conditions, the V635's CMOS-sensor is poor in low light; taking images appearing blurry and unsaturated.
Getting closer to the action, users can press up and down on the navigation pad to activate the 8x zoom. While sounding impressive, the V635 uses digital zoom rather than optical. Merely cropping the image rather than moving closer, photos will not gain in resolution. Unfortunately all camera phones use digital zoom due to current technology limitations. Manufacturers have yet to produce an optical zoom lens compact enough to apply to cell phones.
The bundle of camera settings available for image correction include Shooting Modes (Night, Photo), Effects (Black and White, Antique, Negative, and Blue, Red, and Green Tints), White Balance (Automatic, Sunny, Cloudy, Indoor, and Office), and Exposure Control (-2 to +2).
Closing the phone while the viewfinder is active changes the display to the external screen, allowing users to see where the lens is aimed during self-portraits and group shots. When this mode is triggered, pressing the Volume Keys zooms in and out while the Smart Key captures the image.
In addition to still photos, the V635 can record up to 60 seconds of video. Supporting MPEG-4, H.263, and AMR audio formats, recording and playback quality can be selected from Sub-QCIF 1 (88 x 72 px), Sub-QCIF 2 (128 x 96 px), and Full QCIF (176 x 144 px) resolutions. Up to 7 fps is available at a bitrate of 59 kbps when recording at a maximum size of 128 x 96 px.
Basic Features
Featuring quad-band frequencies (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 GSM), the V635 is compatible with GSM networks worldwide; delivering all the functionality necessary for a global lifestyle.
Rating the V635's 780 mAh Li-Ion battery at 235 hours of standby and 7.08 hours of talk time, these are under optimal conditions. Actual talk and standby times are lower. Manufacturers and carriers often list talk and standby time ratings with disclaimers about variable performance.
Screen
Conveniently glance at incoming calls with the Motorola V635's CSTN (Color Super Twisted Nematic) external screen. Measuring 96 x 80 px, the 4K-color LCD displays additional information including time, network status, and battery level. Rather unreadable when not backlit or in direct sunlight, it is a common tradeoff among CSTN technology to prolong battery life.
[AD]
On the other hand when flipped opened, a vividly brilliant internal TFT (Thin Film Transistor) screen is exposed, capable of displaying 65K colors at 176 x 220 px in resolution.
Being TFT, rather than CSTN, circuit transistors are placed directly on the glass; technology allowing for faster refresh rates resulting from not having to scan each pixel location. Needed for fast refresh rates, the V635's internal TFT screen is ideal for using the phone as a viewfinder. Bright and clear, the TFT screen doesn't have the dull appearance the external screen does.
Audio
The V635's 22 KHz speaker is able to overlay 24 chords simultaneously; decent compared to today's phones. Much like instruments in an orchestra, users can also create their own music through MotoMixer. By superimposing base tracks and melodies, creative composers can mix their own unique ringtones.
Even though the V635 features polyphonic ringtones, consumers will most likely opt for MP3s. Unlike typical ringtones, which uses a local synthesizer to recreate music, the V635 can play MP3s at a maximum compression rate of 64 kbps. Hence CD tracks, voice recordings, or any audio can be turned into a ringtone.
Using the V635 as an MP3 player requires the use of expandable memory due to the limited internal storage size. Through the included stereo headset and preinstalled player, users can listen to their favorite songs on the road. Other audio capabilities include speakerphone handsfree access, voice recording, and voice dialing.
Messaging
The Motorola V635 includes all the standard text messaging formats: SMS (Short Messaging Service), EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service), and MMS (Multimedia Message Service).
Besides sending just text, EMS lets users format style, size, alignment, and paragraphs. Additionally, MMS allows users to attach photos, sounds, and time-based sequencing; utilizing the integrated camera, video capture, and voice recorder.
Since the numeric keypad requires multiple key presses to input a letter, predictive text makes typing simpler. Choosing from a dictionary of words and phrases, the V635 is able to anticipate which word is being typed. But instead of the more widely used T9 standard, the V635 uses iTAP.
Real-time chat programs also are preinstalled, permitting users start typing away with their buddies. But Wireless Village instant messaging goes beyond previous mobile chat features. By defining open connections with existing IM providers, users can use the most popular chat programs such as AOL, ICQ, Yahoo, and MSN.
Aside from just chatting, Wireless Village allows people to share personal information about their status, (On-line, Off-line, or Busy), location (Home or Work), and moods (Happy or Angry). Additionally, services let users participate in private and public chartrooms.
Entertainment
Able to store 1000 contacts in the Phonebook, the V635 incorporates general PIM (Personal Information Management) applications including Alarm Clock, Calculator, Datebook, and Voice Recorder. Through the integrated email client, the V635 supports POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP accounts. Having the option to watch headers and download the body, consumers are able to connect to third-party email servers.
[AD]
Additionally through J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition), software can be installed on the V635. Being the most popular Java platform for mobile devices, thousands of games and applications have been created by developers, most requiring a fee. Through the internet, users can download and transfer installation files to the V635.
Although the game titles are dependant upon carrier, two J2ME games will most likely come with the V635: Golf and TopGun.
Internet
Integrating a web browser, the Motorola V635 renders pages built upon WAP 2.0 markup languages. Frequently maintaining pages dedicated to real-time data, carriers often provide weather reports, sports scores, stocks quotes, and travel information. And through GPRS Class 10, surfers will be able to browse the web and download multimedia at speeds of up to 48 kbps.
But users probably won't use it much. The Motorola V635 supports high-speed transfer through EDGE (Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution). Building on existing technology, EDGE allows for more than double existing GPRS rates. While theoretically able to transfer at speeds of up to 384 kbps, actual rates will be less.
Storage
With 5.0 MB of internal memory, space for photos, ringtones, and applications should be enough. Dynamically shared among all content stored, users may find themselves running out with such storage-hungry multimedia features.
But should consumers wish to use the V635 as an MP3 player, more memory is required. Fortunately, the Motorola V635 features a TransFlash / microSD expansion slot; hidden underneath the front cover. Rather inconvenient, removing the rim reveals the slot.
Connectivity
With the included USB-cable, users can transfer between a PC and the Motorola V635. Additionally, the V635 can pair and synchronize with other Bluetooth devices within a 10 meter radius. Although restrictive, this prevents interference between the V635's peripheral devices and those belonging to others nearby.
Aside from including PAN (Personal Area Network) and OTA (Over-The-Air) technologies, the V635 also features SyncML. As the common language for synchronizing devices and applications over any network, SyncML allows any personal information, such as email, calendars, to-do lists, and contact information, to be accessible and up-to-date no matter where the information is stored.
Conclusion
Keeping a similar shape and design as the V600, Motorola hopes to keep the golden touch with the release of the V635. Including an expandable memory slot, the added flexibility releases the V635's full potential; allowing consumers to utilize the powerful 1.23-megapixel camera and MP3 player.
As a formidable business device, the quad-band GSM frequencies allow weary travelers to take it with them worldwide. Taking advantage of EDGE connectivity, transferring files at broadband-like speeds makes working away from the office possible.
[AD]
Diminishing its connectivity and multimedia forte, the transfer rate through the USB-cable are slow while the included stereo headset is mediocre at best.
But the Motorola V635 is hard to criticize. With a vividly bright LCD, sufficiently loud speakerphone, and excellent keypad layout, the V635 is truly a well-rounded phone; with strengths in imaging, audio, connectivity, messaging, and design. |
