Motorola - V3690Motorola V3690
Advantages it's cute, it's cool, not everyone has one...
Disadvantages not as feature packed as some mobiles
Since I first saw this phone I wanted to get one, so in May this year when the opportunity came to upgrade my existing phone, I leapt at the chance. The only choice I had to make was if I wanted to spend a little more money and get the V50. When I looked into this it the V50 didn’t offer that much more than the V3690 (except for WAP). As this was not a feature I wanted on my mobile I went for the cheaper V3690.
So, almost four months later, am I happy with this choice?
The simple answer is yes, I love it. This is a great little phone with all the standard features you would expect. The basic things are all there, phone book, choice of ring tones, SMS, vibrate alert (which is very), call monitors and the rest. But this phone stands out for the extra features which add a little more...
Firstly voice activated dialling, yes I know that this isn’t a new idea, but is works very well on this phone. There is a button located high on the side of the phone (where your middle finger would be if you were to hold the phone to make a call), you press this button once and the phone beeps, then just say your programmed ‘voice tag’ and the phone does the rest. The only problem that I have had with this feature is trying to remember which number I have coupled with which name. If I say my wife’s name, will it call her at work, on her mobile, or our home…? I just wish I could remember, but then I suppose there is always the old fashioned method of dialling the number you want.
Beware if you have more than one friend with the same name, or you may find that you have arranged to meet the wrong person at the pub.
Secondly, ‘voice notes’. This is a feature that allows you to record three minutes of a telephone call, which can then be played back later. This is an incredibly useful feature, think of all those times when someone is giving you a phone number, or directions and you don’t have a pe n and paper to hand.
Recording is very simple, there is a small button on the top of the phone next to the ariel, this can very easily be pressed mid-call. Whilst recording the phone beeps every ten seconds, according to Motorola this is so that the person you are speaking to is aware that they are being recorded. It is illegal to record a telephone conversation without the other person’s consent, so sorry no collecting of information for blackmail purposes.
The other main plus point, and to be honest the reason you should buy this phone, is the little leather ‘holster’ that comes with it. This is a small black case, with a belt clip, it has a strap that comes over the top of the phone to hold it in place, and it is a pleasingly snug fit. Embarrassed as I am to admit this, when I got the phone it was a few days before I tried to figure out the features, I was just too busy playing with the ‘holster’.
The reception seems to be fine with this phone; I have not had any problems. Battery life is surprisingly good, my phone is on for at least 45 hours a week and I make calls on it every day, yet still the battery only need to be charged once a fortnight – very impressive.
Is there anything wrong with this phone I hear you ask.
Well, yes like all things it does have faults. Probably the biggest is the navigation of the menus, which is convoluted and largely irritating. Having had numerous mobiles over the years, I would say this is the least logical phone set up I have encountered. You do sometimes find yourself pressing numerous buttons just to get to a very basic function. Perhaps if I made better use of the programmable ‘smart buttons’ and the shortcut menu I could get round this problem
Those of you who have Nokia phones may be disappointed to hear that this phone does not have any games, and you cannot program your own ring tones. I have always wanted my phone to sound like a phone and preferred the games on my Neo Geo, so was not put off by this, but if you are, pay a bit more and get the V50 which I believe has both of these features.
So, if you want a good, reliable (and incredibly cute) mobile phone, I really doubt that you can find one better. If you do get this phone, go to the pub with your mates, let them all get out their Nokias, leave it a few minutes and then set this baby down on the table, they will look and they will lust. Promise.
Advantages great looks and features
Disadvantages bad battery life
The Motorola V3690 is in my opinion a great little phone. It weighs only 82 grams, and has many useful features such as voice activation, silent vibrate and a large capacity phonebook. It comes in four colours, blue titanium, black and champagne. The titanium model looks the best in my opinion. The later models of the V3690 also have the useful feature of predictive text input, which nowadays is a necessity for all enthusiastic texters. The V3690 also has a voice tagbook, in which the user can record voice notes for up to 3 minutes. This function is very useful. Also, you can dial up to 25 numbers just by speaking the name, this is good when you can't be bothered going through the menus which are hard to navigate.
The V3690 also has a 'smart button' on the side of the phone, which activates the voice dialling along with other things. This is useful to have, as it gives you one touch access to the most important bits of your phone, for example the phonebook.
The V3690 also has voive activated menus! You simply say something like 'battery' or 'volume' and it will come up! It has some quick access menus which can be user programmable, for up to nine entries. This is good when for speedy access to your most frequently used menus.
Similarlarily to the Ericsson T28, the Motorola V3690 has an active flip, and if you are after a small phone with many great features, decide between these two.
One major disadvantage is that the menu takes some getting used to although once you are used to it you will be fine.
A very desirable phone, which will make you the envy of many of your friends!
Now the price tag is about a tenner on contract, I really would reccommend this phone, as i paid £220 for one and I was happy with it . |
