Mitsubishi - Trium Mondo
Mitsubishi Trium Mondo

Mondo is a new device produced by Trium, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Electric. This is a handheld with GSM capabilities, and supports GPRS with a software upgrade. Mondo bundles a 166MHz Intel chip and Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system. Showcased a few months ago at the CeBIT trade show in Hanover, Germany, the Trium Mondo is now on European retail shelves (and is expected to reach Singapore shores in August).

At First Glance
The first impression of the 200g Trium Mondo is more that of a handheld than a cellphone due to the form factor and features that smack of the usual Pocket PC-powered PDA functions. This makes the Trium Mondo an ideal choice for executives on the road who need a portable office. Of course, unlike usual cellphones, the Trium Mondo is not designed to be held close to the user's ear due to its large LCD display that would steam up from all that close contact. Thus the Trium Mondo sells with a headset that enables the user to send and receive phone calls without even touching the phone.

As a handheld, the Trium Mondo features a number of applications including pocket versions of Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Excel. The PDA-phone also bundles Windows Media Player to allow users to listen to MP3 format music files. There is also a Microsoft Reader for reading eBooks on the gadget. The Trium Mondo at the moment is available only with a monochrome display. With its GPRS capabilities that let users take advantage of permanent Internet connection, the Trium Mondo is enabled for a number of actual and future services such as mobile commerce. Due to the LCD touch screen display, users can access functions using the supplied stylus or by touching the screen directly with their fingertip, even if this means leaving fingerprints on the screen.

Using The PDA
When first turned on, the device requires you to go through few steps in order to adjust the screen. Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system takes advantage of a user-friendly graphic interface, especially for PC users who will find the PC Control Panel-like interface familiar. The operating system includes a handy electronic guide that displays in a simple way how to access and utilize the Trium Mondo's many features. You can customize some keys to have direct access to the more commonly used functions. However, you can always open the programs you've used during the day from the Start menu because these would be saved in the Status Bar as icons.

Making That Call
As a cellphone, the Trium Mondo is primarily an E-GSM dualband phone with a built-in WAP 1.1 browser, which allows data exchange at a 14.4kbps rate. It can store up to 256 contact details on the SIM card, but the Trium Mondo manages easily both the SIM and phonebook memories. The device even has three different phonebook memories. For each saved phone number, you can complete the database with addresses and more phone numbers in order to create a mailing list. The Trium Mondo's virtual keyboard, which appears on the 16-gray scale display, features large keys so you can either input with the stylus or your fingertips.

You can set the conversation in handsfree or multi-conference mode. You can also make emergency phone calls, put a conversation on hold, allow outgoing calls only to selected numbers, identify incoming calls (which is dependent on the network operator), and divert incoming calls to a selected number--a useful feature in case of low battery power.

A Power-Hungry Portable
Power is a sensitive subject. The Trium Mondo's talktime is quite scarce: up to 3 hours on a Lithium-ion battery. The screen is power-hungry and needs a lot of energy to work at its best. Despite an overnight recharge, after a few hours of testing (without making any calls) the phone began beeping to warn the user that the device was running out of power. We even had to set the auto-shutdown for every 30 seconds.

Enough Bundled Entertainment To Keep You Smiling
Despite this flaw, Mondo has lots of qualities, especially as a handheld in the Pocket PC arena. We enjoyed the Windows Media Player which lets the user download audio files in WMA format from the Internet and listen to stereophonic music, either from the bundled speakers or the headset. Unfortunately each file must be a maximum of 89kb, just like the demo file, but you will appreciate this feature during underground train rides or while in a queue.

The Trium Mondo features only one game, Solitaire, but packs the Microsoft Reader program which lets you download eBooks from the Internet and read them on your device as if they were real books. To turn the pages, you can use the Up/Down controls or touch the page number. You can create a customized library, including texts and images. You can even listen to the book when this is available in audio format. For example, you can download Audible Manager software from the Web site.

The Trium Mondo offers other features as well, such as Internet Explorer to surf the Web and access email. On board are a yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily calendar and a diary to manage activities. There is an infrared port to share documents with other compatible devices.

Trium Mondo is a great WAP-enabled phone with no reception problem. And if the service is available (within the end of 2001 in Europe), you'll be able to upgrade the Trium Mondo's software to include GPRS support. This is a 15-minute download.

Conclusion
The Trium Mondo provides an alternative to current PDA-phones in the market, such as the Ericsson R380 and Motorola Accompli. What Mitsubishi's device has going for it are its built-in features such as Microsoft Reader and Windows Media Player which are typically bundled with high-end handhelds. However, this comes out around the same time as Nokia's 9210 Communicator, which could give the Trium Mondo a run for its money.
