LG - C1200
LG C1200

LG C1200 - Cellular phone - GSM / LG Electronics is one of the world's largest electronics manufacturers, producing a large range of consumer electronics and IT products. LG has created reputation for progressive technology and innovation with the latest technological developments in consumer electronics, home appliances and IT products. The LG C1200 is a Clamshell Handset.

Advantages Easy to use, lots of features, good price
Disadvantages Nothing Major
Some time ago I convinced myself that I would only ever buy a Nokia phone because they had the best features and ease of use. However, I recently moved house and had to change networks due to poor reception and the LG C1200 was on offer so I bought it and I have to say it is the best phone I have ever had.

The phone I have is Pay As You Go with T-Mobile and cost £38.79 from ASDA. It is a “limited” edition in burgundy (the only colour I’ve seen!). In the box you get the phone, charger, earphone, neck strap, pretty plastic dangly thing, sim card and E-Top-Up card.

Probably the worst thing about the phone is the mirror on the front. As this is a clamshell design it would have been useful to have some sort of screen on the front with information about texts or calls. Instead there is a flashing light which, as far as I can tell is there to go green if you have a signal or amber if you don’t. On the outside of the phone there is a socket for the charger and a covered in socket for the earphone. There is also a volume button and this is very useful when you are making a call as you can adjust the volume of the call. However, I did find that if you accidentally press it before or after a call it will adjust the keypad settings and these can easily be turned on or off by mistake.

Once you open the phone you are greeted with a very good layout. There is a nice clear 65,000-colour screen at the top with the keyboard underneath. The top two keys are “soft” keys that vary depending where you are in the menu structure. Beneath these you have four arrows with a central “OK” key. Underneath these a key to connect you direct to the “T-Zones” wap site and one that takes you to your downloads. Finally there are the standard phone keypad keys. The keys are easy to press and I did not find any problems with texting. The screen is clear and easy to read.

The initial menu is graphical but once you get into each of the sub-menus they are text based. And I will go through them one by one.

The first is the Profile menu there are six profiles and all of them can be customised and re-named. You can change the tones for ringing, messages, keypad, sound effects and on/off. I like the last one because there is nothing worse than realising you should have turned your phone off and having it scream at you when you press the off button. I would have liked timed profiles so that, for example, the profile changes automatically when you leave work, but you can’t have everything.

The next menu is for T-Zones and T-Mobile seem quite keen for you to connect to wap sites using the phone. T-Zones is ok allowing you to download a selection of wallpapers, games and ringtones. A word of warning though, I have noticed that there are very few companies supplying games for this phone. I am sure they will catch up soon as there is no reason why Java games won’t run on this phone.

The next menu is for the call register this is very standard and nothing to get excited about but useful if you want it.

Texts come next. I found texting easy on this phone. You can send and receive picture messages (although you can’t take your own pictures) and even record voice messages and memos. It uses the standard T9 dictionary and it is very easy to switch from T9 to ABC to numeric modes. When you are ready to send a text you can choose from recently sent numbers or search for a new one. You can delete texts one by one or all of the texts that you have read.

The Downloads menu allows you to view and download pictures, sounds and games. The phone comes with one game pre-installed called “Sword of Wind”.

Next we have contacts. I like the contacts on this phone. Firstly you can store several numbers for the same person and choose which one is displayed as the main number. So if you usually call Fred on his mobile you can have that as his main number, whereas your Mum can be her home number. You can input numbers for Home, Mobile, Office, Fax and Email you can put numbers into groups and lastly you can have a picture for each person. Using caller groups allows you to specify ringtones etc for each group.

Next we have the scheduler and alarm. You can set up to 5 alarms to ring either once, every day or weekdays only, so no more waking up at 6am on a Saturday because you forgot to switch the alarm off! The scheduler is very good, displaying a month at a time with a pretty picture. You can either schedule an appointment with an alarm or just add a memo.

The favourites menu is handy as it allows you to choose your 9 most frequently used options and have them in one menu.

The settings menu is pretty much what you’d expect allowing you to set up various options for the Internet, security etc.

In the tools menu there are options for a calculator, unit converter, world time, voice recorder and memory status and these all work well.

The final menu is for “interactive”. Basically this allows you to entertain yourself or obtain information by text. The options are: - Fun, Info, Music, Chat, Sports, Games, Text Plus, Groups, Voicemail, T-Zones and Top-Up. I am afraid that these are too numerous to go into in detail.

The battery life on the phone is good although you can be fooled into thinking it is not because the meter goes from four bars to two bars very quickly but then stays on two bars for a long time.

Overall I think this phone is excellent and good value for money with very little to find fault with.
Summary: Good phone with everything I need
