The iPAQ 6828 is the latest in a series of communicator devices from HP. Communicator devices are devices that are able to make and receive phone calls and text messages. They are capable of both voice and data transmission. This one is the Wi-Fi model, and its sister model the 6818 is essentially the same device minus the Wi-Fi.

Exterior
The 6828 has a nicer shape than its predecessors, going for the slightly slimmer look favoured by both O2 and Dopod PDA devices. Of course, this means that you will have to give up having a full keyboard for typing.
The unit we got was in Silver colour, and the 2 Megapixel camera lens is on the back while the expansion slot is on the top of the device. USB charger and headset jacks are on the bottom of the device while camera and recording hotkeys are on the left of the device.
The flip thing is nice, but annoying as it gets in the way of the power button and the stylus, two components which are the main tools to use this PDA.
Buttons/Screen
There are few buttons, and as far as we can see, all are chromed except for the softkeys which appear to be slightly opaque in appearance.
The screen is a vibrant 240 x 320 pixels set into a 262K TFT screen. This of course means that while it looks fantastic indoors, it gets rather useless under the bright sunlight.
Software/Messaging
The device runs on version 5.1 of the new Windows Mobile OS, and Activesync 4.1 is provided in the accompanying CD. Users should take note that Activesync 4.1 is not recommended for previous Windows CE versions as it turns off some components from refreshing.
However, I went right ahead an used it for another older PDA and it worked just fine, and did not hang as much as it used to do. I’ll leave it as it is now because I like it better this way. And then, removing certain DLL files have to be done manually if you want to change the Activesync from 4.1 to an older version.
Messaging is varied enough, with SMS, MMS and email support built into the device. There is support for MSN instant messaging too if that floats your boat. You can use either the graffiti method of writing or peck your text into the message via the onscreen keyboard. Of course, there is always an option of hooking up a Bluetooth keyboard and using it if you really need to do a large amount of typing.
PIM
Of course, with regard to Personal Information Management or PIM, there is no easier way than attaching the PDA to your own PC, and then synchronising everything from Outlook to the PDA. While easy, this method ports everything from your computer, including some things that you might not want to synchronise in the first place. Be forewarned, and check the fine print before clicking on the synchronise button.
There is 64MB of system RAM and 128MB of system ROM. The card slot is on top as mentioned, and you can slot in Mini-SD cards as needed to get more storage space to put music and movie files.
Camera/Video
The camera in this device is a 2 Megapixel one, which is a step up from the 1 Megapixel one found in the preceding model. This application launches much faster than it did before, and having the whole screen as a viewfinder was really amazing, especially as the screen was very clear and large. It would not be remiss to say that this is probably the best viewfinder in a handheld device currently.
Multimedia/Voice
The music player is quite good actually, and I would venture to say that it was on par with what was found in the iPAQ 6515.
Voice reception is pretty OK, and both parties can easily hear each other without too much problems. There is a media shortcut that sits on the main screen so that you can now play music directly without having to launch the player applicatio
Connectivity
Bluetooth is by now a common feature in all HP communicators, and the infrared port is now on the right side of the device, close to the place where you put the stylus.
A plus point of this device is that it supports Wi-Fi, and can also connect via GPRS and EDGE but is not able to support 3G just yet. Anyhow, it is my opinion that I here of many people talking about 3G phones without even realising what it is or how it can be used efficiently
Games
There are two game suites that you can install from the accompanying CD. The Game Box gems application installed without any problems and PDA Mill has done quite a good job here with the game, creating simple yet totally engrossing games that most people will love.
Just like what other reviewers have said, I loved the Rising Diamonds game and played with it endlessly, scoring more than 93,068 points which puts me at the number 27 place on the globe! However, to upload the scores, I would have to download a utility and install it, which of course my regular readers know by now that I positively hate being forced to install anything on my PC.
The other suite of games is called the Game Box Classics, which has Snake and Aqua Block among other titles. Both the games are quite enough for a casual gamer, and the music provided with the games was rather good with enough variety so that you don’t get bored with the same jingle repeating every couple of minutes. |
