Overview

Nokia isn’t the only one that is coming up with new handsets recently. Previously, we previewed both the T39m and T68 - where both handsets scored well in most departments. The recently launched T65 is no exception - with its design targeting users who demand simplicity but also the right level of functionality. And all this has to come at an affordable price tag.

The T65 is not something you’ll expect from Ericsson. It’s very flat - or wide - and probably considered quite different from its predecessors thanks to the phone’s overall curvature design. The flatter or wider design of the phone makes allowance for the larger greyscale LCD and makes holding the phone less stressing thanks also to its lightweight design.
"One button WAP access - a turquoise-coloured hot key, located below the answer button"

A new design concept of the T65 is its non-removable internal battery. One of the probable reasons why the battery has become non-removable is to decrease the chances of “wear and tear” between the battery contacts on both the battery and phone. A major downside to this is when you run out of battery, you have no other choice but to get home quickly and charge up the phone - since you can’t have a spare battery! Subsequently, the SIM card insertion point is now located at the phone’s top side near the earpiece as a slide-out mechanism.

Getting around on the T65 was easier than on the T39m - thanks to its bigger screen (which can fit at least twice as more lines!) Navigating around the phone using the 4-direction (up, down, left, right) key further assists in the phone’s ease of use. A turquoise-coloured hot key, located below the ‘answer’ button, acts as a fast key for accessing relevant functions whilst performing specific functions on the phone. For example, when you are typing an SMS message, this hot key will bring up functions such as adding special characters, changing the character set, or looking through the dictionary for the correct word when T9 is used.
"Ability to present a greater amount of text with a large greyscale screen"

Unfortunately, I found the phone’s keypad quite difficult to be able to use properly. These included situations whilst trying to create phone book entries (entering names and numbers) and typing SMS messages using the built-in T9 predictive input function. The problem becomes extremely irritating when I start typing text faster.

The T65 also comes with a WAP browser - which can also operate over GPRS. I welcome this availability as faster WAP connections are becoming a greater reality for not just people who can afford expensive and featured-packed phones. The larger greyscale screen can display WAP pages with greater depth (that is, several shades of grey versus purely black and white) and ability to present a greater amount of text (depending on the text size chosen).

WAP over GPRS

With GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), this allows for fast Internet connections which, in turn, improve the experience of surfing WAP pages from the mobile phone. With the help of a large-sized, high-resolution screen, the T65 makes WAP browsing a breeze!

Large-sized, high-resolution greyscale LCD screen

Having a high-quality LCD screen with greyscale capability allows for different shades of grey to be used in depicting images and text at a higher level of quality. The larger-sized screen is also a big bonus - especially when it comes to fitting more things in on one screen.

T9 predictive text input

The T65 comes with the availability of the T9 predictive text input method - which has been around for quite some time on other branded phones. This allows for quick completion of frequently-used words in everyday language to be used in typing, for example, SMS text messages.

Built-in, non-removable battery

The internal battery on the T65 is non-removable - which defeats the need of carrying around a spare battery.

Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS)

EMS allows for the insertion of objects into a message - which may include a picture, sound, melody or animation. The difference here, compared to SMS, is that EMS allows for more than just text in a message.

Picture editor and ringtone composer

The T65 allows for the editing and creation of graphics such as EMS-related objects and ringtones - where up to nine musical tones can be used to manage different callers.

Dual band (900/1800MHz)

The T65 can be used in networks throughout Australasia, Europe and African continents thanks to the availability of seamless dual band support (900/1800MHz). This function is also dependent on the network provider’s service availability.

Internal antenna

Similar to the T68, the T65 has taken up the trend of having a built-in antenna behind the phone’s earpiece and SIM card reader.

Multiple phone numbers and text on a single phonebook entry

The T65 allows for multiple phone numbers to be made on a single phonebook entry on the phone’s memory.

Business card exchange

Similar to the sending and receiving of business cards on Nokia phones, the T65 allows this through SMS. The standardising of business cards is good news for people who do such exchanges with people that have different brands of mobile phones.

Code memo

Some may find this useful (some may not). The T65 comes with a function called a code memo - where it allows you to store away sensitive codes (for example, passwords and credit card numbers) that you may need at various times. The code memo protects these codes by using a 4-digit password and a “checkword” that confirms whether the correct password is used. Up to ten (10) secret codes can be entered on the phone - and are all protected by encryption.

In Summary

For those people who have become sick of the ‘same old Ericsson looks’, the T65 is a big change from those times. Encompassing a style that is more aerodynamic and consisting of a larger, high-resolution greyscale screen makes this one of the best Ericsson phone that is very reasonably priced (considering that it has WAP over GPRS). Unfortunately, the only downside I found bothering is the non-removable internal battery - which is something of an inconvenience.
