Ericsson - T29sEricsson T29s – There is no doubt about it
There are some things I really like about this phone.
There are some things that just plain annoy me.
But when it comes down to it, I bought one, so it can’t be that bad, can it?
Let’s start with the good.
Firstly, it’s not a Nokia, and for me at the moment, that’s a plus (is there anyone that doesn’t have an 8210?)
But this phone does make a case for itself too.
Handling
As someone who has made a lot of calls inadvertently while walking along, I have always liked flip phones and the way the buttons are protected, and Ericsson has continued on their tradition of making some of the best. This phone is reasonably light (105g), small and slim, and sits very comfortably in your shirt pocket. It’s the same size as the T28, so basically a Nokia with an antenna, but it feels strong and well made. The two colours that it comes in look pretty good too, there’s a choice of purple or blue, but they’re not interchangeable.
Allows you to reject calls without opening the flap (push up twice while phone is ringing).
Features
This phone has everything that you would expect from a good mobile. It is WAP compatible, but its use will be limited by the 3-line display that the T29 possesses. There are some pretty funky screen savers and animations, and the vibration is strong enough to get the heart fluttering. It also has voice dialling, but it seems to be very sensitive, and you need to speak in exactly the same tone or it won’t work.
A lot of the features of this phone are left over from the T28. They include the little slide button that shows how much battery life is remaining in minutes, which is pretty nifty, but seems to be a little inaccurate. This button also allows you to reject calls without opening the flap (push up twice while phone is ringing) so that you can send your boss straight to voicemail!
The flip has gone from the notoriously easy to break spring-button-flip of the T28 to the old ways of pushing the flip open yourself like with the T10. Like the T28 though, the T29 is active-flip. The colour of the screen is very classy, a nice deep green blue which looks really good in a dark room.
Ericsson T29s – There is no doubt about it
SMS is where the world is heading and Ericsson has tried to improve the features here. The T29 supports Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) that allows the sending of images and ring tones via SMS. There are also functionality improvements, with options including sending messages to groups of people, and chat features similar to those on Nokia’s 3110. What simply can’t be understood however is the lack of any predictive text for SMS. While SMS writing is not overly difficult, surely some sort of software for predictive text is necessary these days. This must be the next thing that Ericsson changes.
Some of the old functions come back, though, and this phone incorporates a stopwatch, timer, alarm and calculator. The games on this phone are completely addictive. There are 5 to choose from and they will get you through the longest train trips without a worry. And yes, they are a lot better than Snake!
One thing I love about this phone is that it automatically stores all your sent messages, so you can always see what your friends wrote when they “accidentally took” your phone, or what you have written to people after you’d had one too many.
An annoying thing noticed is… I think technicians, not musicians, composed the ring tones. And it shows. Luckily, you can make one yourself.
Overall I liked this phone enough to buy it. It is not the best phone on the market, but it does everything I want it to do, it is small, and still has enough cool features to keep me interested. |
