Ericsson - T28 World
Ericsson T28 World

Advantages very small, plenty of features, world wide usage
Disadvantages none
Let's start by saying that "Don't judge this phone from it's picture". Seriously, it doesn't do it justice. Some people think if they've seen one Ericsson, they've seen 'em all. Absolutely not true. This phone is TINY, it's thin, it's almost the lightest cellular in the world! For the record, only the GSM Vader from Motorola is lighter, but only single band.

Well, in my opinion the best and main reason I bought this phone was because of its GSM ability now for those of you who don't know what GSM is I will explain it! GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) is a digital mobile telephone system that is widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. GSM uses a variation of TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and is the most widely used of the three digital wireless telephone technologies (TDMA, GSM, and CDMA). GSM digitizes and compresses data, then sends it down a channel with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot. It operates at either the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz frequency band.
GSM is the DE facto wireless telephone standard in Europe. GSM has over 120 million users worldwide and is available in 120 countries, according to the GSM MoU Association. Since many GSM network operators have roaming agreements with foreign operators, users can often continue to use their mobile phones when they travel to other countries.
So basically this means that if you bought a GSM phone from your local mobile phone retailer you could take it almost anywhere in the world and use it on one of the carriers in that area. I have found this to be a truly beneficial thing to have! Its definitely a great thing if you have tried renting a GSM phone or get tired of having to give out hotel numbers or keep having to give out new numbers everytime you travel with this GSM ability its one number anywhere in the world the people calling you don't even have to dial an area code just dial your number! The next feature on my list of wonderful features would be the Voice Dialing! This is a wonderful invention for those of us who insist on using the phone while driving and if you are reading an opinion on a cell phone you more than likely have one and you know what i mean :) The voice dialing is very easy to use you simply slide a small button on the side of the phone up and then say the name of the person you want to call and presto it dials! Now this Voice Dialing does take some set up and i will explain so you know what you are in for! First off you go into the "Phone Book" as it is referred to in the phone and select Add New Number once you do this you give it the written name and number of the party and select save then it asks you if you wish to add a voice label if you select yes it asks you to say the name of the party after the tone. Once you have done this you choose save and you have completes your first Voice Dialed Number! To store more numbers you simply repeat the process! Next up on the wonderful feature list would be Email ability! This may seem odd but if you think about it this gives you the ability to receive email anywhere in the world now this feature is provider dependent but if your provider supports it WILL work when GSM roaming! At first it is slightly hard to type with the small keypad but with practice it becomes very quick and efficient! I have found that being able to send email to reply right away is a wonderful asset! Next feature would be its lightweight and size! This thing is so small it is only 2 inches wide and 4 inches tall when closed and 6 inches long when open! Now you might think that this means it is hard to use but it is very well designed and everything on it is right where it needs to be. Also this phone only weighs 3 oz which means you can put it in your shirt pocket and forget you have it until it scares you from ringing :) The last but not least feature I am going to talk about would be the VibraAlert! Now a s you might know on most phones this is optional this means buying some new battery! Well, with this phone it is STANDARD and I love this feature it is absolutely perfect for meeting or movies or anywhere that you need to be silently alerted. Also activation of "silent mode" is a breeze just hold the "C" button for 4 seconds and press yes when it asks if you wish to activate silent mode and you are done! The same follows for deactivation! I have found this to be very very useful also in meetings where when someone calls it vibrates 4 times and the forwards to your voicemail and also it alerts you to a voicemail by vibrating in pulses. This is truly a wonderful feature! Next up is the battery life! This phone has the best battery life of any phone I have ever used! On average I use it 2 hours per day and it still never gets below 50% power! And charging is very fast I can go from 0 to 100% in 30 mins of charging time thanks to the STANDARD high speed charger so if you use your phone more that 4 hours a day just take you charger with you to lunch and charge it there in only 15 mins:) So if you need a phone with a great battery life than this is the one!

Two games are included (Tetris and Solitaire) , a calculator, stop-watch, alarm clock and timer are also available.

I have dropped my phone numerous occasions and must say it is very durable...even though it may give the opposite appearance due to it having a plastic housing

Battery life is excellent with the new Lithium Polymer battery. I read somewhere that they have the same life as Lion at 30% the weight. Thus this phone's 2.9 oz weight. You also have the option of two larger batteries for even more talk/standby time.

Optional Ericsson accessories available:

- Wireless modem for use with laptop computer or PALM handheld.

- Radio adapter for handsfree listening of music and phone calls (placing/receiving).

- MP3 player adapter for handsfree listening of music and phone calls (placing/receiving).

- various cases.

Advantages Size, Standby time shown in hours
Disadvantages Flip a bit fragile
The first thing that strikes you about this phone is its size. It is incredibly small and thin. Having said that the aerial is a bit on the big side. It is NOT a tri-band phone as is often mistakenly claimed. It is a dual-band phone but is GSM900/1900 as opposed to the usual GSM900/1800. This is very important because it means that in the UK it can only be used on Vodafone or Cellnet. However it can be used in North America unlike the 900/1800 variety of phone.

The main disadvantage to me is the flip – it seems so fragile that I’m always worrying it will get broken off. Since the microphone is in the flip this would be disastrous. The release button needs to be pressed quite firmly to open the flip, which has advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand this prevent the flip opening accidentally but I have found that if I let someone else use the phone (when people see it they often want to try it) they start to pull at the flip to open it.

The battery operating time is reasonable and the remaining standby time and talk time (in hours/minutes) can be displayed on the screen. This is useful but I find it tends to overestimate the remaining time – although it gets better as the battery runs down (which I suppose is where it is most important). The Lithium polymer battery means it can be charged at any time without affecting overall battery life.

The vibrating alert is useful but I find it is not very strong and it can often be a while before I notice the phone is vibrating. This is the first phone with vibrating alert I’ve used so I’m unsure how this compares to other phones but it is poor compared to my Motorola pager.

If you want to use a hands-free kit with this phone it is essential to have the type with the ‘end-call’ button on the cable if you want to make calls without opening the flip. It is possible to initiate a call without opening the flip (by holding the slider on the side to i nitiate voice dialling). It is also possible to answer a call using voice control. However I have been unable to find a way of ending a call without the ‘end-call’ button or without opening the flip. Many hands-free kits for this phone do not have this button.

Overall I think this is a nice phone but perhaps a little fragile
