Ericsson - R310sEricsson R310s
Advantages Resistance, Battery life, Signal quality
Disadvantages Bulky
Well, I don't even know why I am bothering to write a review now for this phone. It has been on the market for over 2 years, but I have got a hold of it just now. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it a long time ago, but then I had no intention of purchasing a mobile phone.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this baby in the window of a dealer a month ago! I thought the R310 was an extinct species. It seems they stumbled upon a whole load of these phones. Brand new and with one year warranty! Anyway they sold them out in less than a few weeks.
Enough introduction, let's talk phone.
Some general things:
1. Built on magnesium frame, the mic and speaker are protected by ePTFE membranes (by GORE & Associates, Inc.), so it is actually water-proof, not just splash-proof. The manual says that the phone is cleaned under the tap.
2. Excellent reception, signal and sound quality (like all Ericssons, so I've heard).
3. The menu system looks like a beta version of the menu systems found on T28s, T29s, R320s or other phones sharing that system. Anyhow, the functionality is very good.
4. The vibration is not anything spectacular, but decent.
5. The green backlight... ahhh... yes, the backlight is simply beautiful. Perfect, constant, no dark areas, Unbelievable.
6. Ringtones: again, nothing spectacular. It has a composer. The volume has enough steps(7) to satisfy any taste.
7. Stamina. Talk time over 4h, stand by 120h. And one great feature is the battery status indicator, which shows the amount of talk and stand-by time left in the battery in hours and minutes.
8. Games. Two: Tetris and Solitaire. A nice selection.
Now something for the maniacs, the only ones who would ever buy a chunky phone like this and love it:
1. The grip. The grip is incredible. The phone is covered with rubber. It feels great in the hand. Not slippery when wet.
2. Waterproof. As previously discussed.
3. Antishock. I dropped it once from chest-level, on a hard rocky-cement surface, in the rain. It bumped a few times then stopped into a puddle. Except a few scratches on one side, no damage.
4. SharkFin antenna. Besides the fact that it gives the phone personality, it provides that good reception and signal I was talking about.
5. Multi-purpose strap. So you can strap it to almost anything.
6. Back lid screws. Although it makes SIM removal or switching a real drag, it looks cool.
7. The possibility to get an Adventure Kit for your R310s. It's made by Victorinox and it has a compass, a thermometer, an altimeter and some other stuff I can't remember now.
I've had this phone for over a month, and the only problems, if I might call them problems, were:
1. The battery. When I got the phone it was about 30% charged, so I waited for it to be completely depleted before the recharghe. The problem was that the battery didn't start anymore. I plugged the phone for charging, waited well over 2 hours and still nothing happened. So I went back to the shop and they gave the batt some "shock-treatment". After a few recharging cycles this problem should not arise again. I hope.
2. Once, when I exited the Solitaire game, the phone turned itself off, and then started to vibrate continuously (it was set on Silent and Vibrate). Before I could get my hands on a coin to open it, it stopped vibrating and turned itself back on. Just like that.
This happened a little after the dropping incident (about an half an hour or so). I have no idea if these were related.
Menu system:
1. A little slow (like all the Ericssons, so I've heard, again).
2. When writing SMS there is no indication of how many characters were used (or are left).
3. Also when writing SMSs, the text input get slower and slower as the text gets bigger.
4. No Predictive Input(T9). That would have been a nice touch. I've seen T9 in actio n on a Nokia. It's pretty cool.
5. No WAP. No problem, if you ask me. WAP is an expensive service, besides being slow. I had the A2628s (WAP enabled) a short while before the R310s, and I used it once to check it out; I was disappointed and never used it again.
Menu system items:
1. Phone Book: it does exactly what it says. Manages your phone numbers. It has also voice dialing.
2. Messages: again, it's obvious what this menu does.
3. Call info: information on missed calls, call times, call duration etc.
4. Settings: in here you can tweak and personalise your phone. Switch profiles, select languages, ringtones, display options etc.
5. Extras: Alarm clock, Timer, Stopwatch (9 Laps memory), Calculator, Games (Tetris and Solitaire).
6. Call Handling: play around with your calls, if your card permits it. Show/Hide your number, hold calls, switch calls, join calls, transfer calls. And some more other stuff. This menu is so "let's play telephone operator".
7. My shortcuts: exactly. Your can set shortcuts to any of the phone's features. Without this menu, the simple task of changing your ringtone or profile would have you browsing through menus and menus.
Okay, so it's not exactly the 2003 prototype of a phone, no screen savers, no picture messaging, no WAP, it's a little bulky, it has external antenna (and a lot of it). But it can certainly fulfill your need of communication, and it can do it very good.
This is not the kind of phone that shines when it's neatly put on the table at some office meeting. It's the kind of phone that looks spectacular when taken out hiking, when it gets all dusty and muddy.
Advantages Water resistant, Shock resistant
Disadvantages Bulky
This is the strongest and most durable mobile that I have seen. It may not be the best looking phone on the market but it must be one of the most practical phones out their. I recently dropped mine about 20m onto bare rock whilst rock climbing, the phone withstood the fall and only had one scratch to show for it.
As well as being incredibly durable it also is water resistant, it is packed with features such as vibration alert and isn’t all that chunky, this really is a great phone for any outdoor enthusiast. |
