BlackBerryBlackBerry
The all-in-one wireless data and voice device from Research in Motion, Ltd. (RIM), Waterloo, Ontario (www.blackberry.net). Available in cellphone and PDA sizes, these popular devices extend the office to the road, providing e-mail, phone, text messaging, Web browsing, organizer (calendar, addresses, tasks, etc.), as well as paging, Yahoo instant messaging and corporate data access. A raft of third-party applications is also available.
All About E-Mail
In 1999, the BlackBerry was the first wireless device that synchronized with the company mail system so that users did not require a different e-mail address when traveling. Initially set up for Microsoft Exchange, Domino and GroupWise synchronization were later added. For individuals, a BlackBerry e-mail address is also available.
By early 2004, a million people were using BlackBerries. The number leaped to two million only 10 months later and exceeded four million by 2006. See CrackBerry and smartphone.
crackberry n. A BlackBerry handheld computer, particularly one used obsessively; a person who uses such a computer obsessively.
The devices are manufactured by the Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM) and are resold by cellular phone companies throughout the world. They fit in the palm of the hand and are operated using a trackwheel and buttons.
While including the usual PDA applications (address book, calendar, to-do lists, etc.) as well as telephone capabilities on newer models, the BlackBerry is primarily known for its ability to send and receive e-mail anywhere it has access to an appropriate wireless network, as well as for its built-in keyboard optimized for "thumbing", or using only the thumbs to type. System navigation is primarily accomplished by the trackwheel (or "thumbwheel"), a scrolling wheel with a "click" function, located on the right side of the device. Some models (such as 7510 and 7520) also incorporate a two-way radio.
Modern BlackBerry handhelds incorporate an ARM 7 or 9 processor, however older BlackBerry 950 and 957 handhelds used Intel 80386 processors. They recently announced that new devices will have the Intel XScale PXA9xx cellular processor, code named "Hermon".
The devices are very popular with some businesses, where they are primarily used to provide e-mail delivery to roaming employees. To fully integrate the BlackBerry into a company, the installation of BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) is required.
