BenQ-Siemens - P51BenQ's P51 Looks Like a Contender
Bryan Betts is blogging again for us from CeBIT in Germany, this time about interesting handhelds from BenQ. He writes:
"The P51 from BenQ-Siemens might be a good bit bigger than a BlackBerry or iPaq--it looks a bit like the former with the latter's screen grafted on--but it also does a whole lot more.
"As well as quad-band GSM (with GPRS, of course) and Windows Mobile 5.0, it has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a GPS receiver, preloaded Skype software, a 1.3mp camera, 128MB of RAM, an SD-Card slot, and a 2.8-inch screen.
"It feels a bit big in the hand, not because it's thick or heavy, but because it's long. The full QWERTY keyboard is a pleasure to use though, compared to say a BlackBerry or a Treo's smaller board. The P51's keys are relatively tall and contoured so it's easy to hit one without hitting those around it.
"At first sight, the P51 must be the mobile operators' nightmare--a Wi-Fi-capable phone preloaded with Skype to eat away at their lucrative roaming business. Wi-Fi phones are inevitable though, and the operators are responding by getting into the Wi-Fi roaming business--so they'll still get a few ounces of your flesh, if not the full pound. |
